Come on people. Do I have to beg??

I listened to the preview of the first one and I thought it was pretty good! It's not my kind of music but to my ears the levels sounded about right and I liked the sound. I think you're a bit harsh on your voice, it's better than most, and the harmonies were nice too.

Shana,

I was very surprised to hear your music.

1. Some of it was Hebrew.
2. for other reasons as well but not for posting up here
Things that have to do with accent etc...

I have done some albums for several artists who come from your same backround perhaps you have heard the latest? - Nomi's Album "Kumi Ori" ?. I am now finishing
an album for Ulpanat "Lehava" from Kedumim.
And I have been talking to Craig Tauberman about a new project with a symphony orchestra.
Are you familiar with this artists?

I would like to tell you more about your music but I could only hear the preview and it's very short. As for downloading the whole song it seems you have to log on or something to hear it and give out info that most people won't or take the trouble to....

Sounds good. Like Jags, not my type of music, but the recording and production sounded good to me.

Shana,

2 questions before I reply.

1. Please write the equipment you used
2. What are you exceptions from your music - Hobbiest?
Pro ? For your personal fun? As a comercial product
to sell?.

All that will help me focus on the right things.

Shailat, I'm assuming you meant expectations? it still doesn't make that much sense, but more then exceptions.

Jake

Ok, i finally downloaded the whole song...an act of congress...my first advice is to get your songs up somewhere that people will actually here them without getting frustrated....I really liked The Music Wont Last, but I had to strain to hear the vocals and I still missed some words...it could the the other instruments covering it, you may try finding what frequency your vocal is living at, and carving out some of that in the background music...or it may be as simple as pushing up the fader on the vocal....also the fadeout was kinda abrubt (spelling?)....other than that I really liked it.....pretty good vocal, but Id really like to hear you push your voice....

Hi

Ok I'm using the Boss Br8, an AKG dynamic mike, Roland PSR-640 , yamaha 12 string and ovation 6 string. I have 6 or 7 more songs I've recorded but the they're either in Hebrew or on religious topics so I generally don't bother posting them. I started recording about a year and a half ago just for the hell of it and I've made some money arranging and recording music for some Jewish school plays in my city as well as for private people. (Small projects like theraputic tapes for a therapist and demos for some songwriter/composers)
I also sing occasionally for different community events. Recently there was a concert in the Broward Center of Performing Arts called "Women in Song" and I performed there. I sing better live than recorded. I have a very hard time singing into a mike and not being able to control the levels while recording. I've also sold about 150 cds just here and there.
So, I can't say I'm recording professionally although my dream would be to put out a proper album (genre-Jewish/pop) I find people like my music (from what I know anyways) because it's fun listening and female singers are few and far about in the Jewish world. But in the meantime I don't have the funds and unfortunately there are no record companies that will take on such a project because of the (in comparison) minute amount of albums what would sell (considering the minute-in comparison-audience)
So that's my story:)

If it makes any difference I'm 20 years old and orthodox-which I'm sure is quite evident.

Id like to hear the rest...you may want to just post a WARNING label that it contains religious topics...

I just listened to a preview, "the music can't last" so maybe I'm jumping at something that's not really there...

it seems rather cluttered. Very nice, but dense vocal harmonies, and very nice but dense musical accopanyment. One needs to open up. My main complaint is that the music seemed like background. It's there, it's not too loud or too quiet but the music as a whole seemed like one thing, like one instrument when it should sound like x-many, instruments. Something has to stand out. Almost like you "mixed" eveything together too much. You make something in the music stand out, then you have something to tie the lead vocal to, then you have something to sit the backing vocals on, the rest fall into place, then you have a nice flow.
Aside from technical things, like the quality of the instrument sounds, the quality of the vocal sound, things that you'd have to spend money, or time in a pro studio to get unfortnatly, this is a really nice production.

Again, these statements are made after only a 30 sec. listen... I will listen to more though...

please don't shy away from posting something that's in Hebrew or something religious... I'd be more intrested in hearing that, that's who you are. This is a "clinic" but it dosen't have to be clinical.

Shana,
I just finished listening to the Music Won't Last, and I enjoyed it very much. I too am involved in Jewish music, I've been a songleader in the Reform Movement (at summer camps and winter retreats/conventions/etc...) for many years now and I sometimes teach music at local Hebrew schools. Your stuff reminded me of Dana Mase (http://www.danamase.com) I'm also a big fan of Debbie Friedman, David Broza, Peter Himmelman, and many more similar artists. I pretty much listen to anything acoustic based, Jewish or not!
Regarding my homerecording, I started going back to school for my Masters (in Software Engineering, yuck!), so I haven't had much time to write much on my own lately. As an aside, my parents live in Boca Raton, which is near the Broward Performing place.
Good luck with all your music, I really enjoyed it (especially after spending all day writing C code!)

Regards,
Evan Gordon
24 years old and Reform!

OK....

I took it today with me to the studio I'm working at to give it a good listen.
I took "Tov Lehodot".

I don't want to coment on the style of music but rather the tech sides to it.

I gather that most of the playback is coming from a synth-Organ type instument and so I have very little to say about that other then I understand your budget problems. But there isn't much to say from the recording aspect of a programed organ accompaniament.

The vocals are a different matter - first off they are to loud. A bit of predelay on the reverb would help as well.

They need a cut at around 750Hz. Due to the fact that you are using a dynamic the vocals or not open enough.
A slight boost at around 10k will open them a bit.
I tried this at the studio and it opened them nicely.
Save up some money for a good condensor. It will pay off.

A bit of compression on the whole mix will put the peices
together more tightly. I ran a compressor on it but your vocals were so loud it introduced a bit of pumping.....
With a little care it can be done and make it all more cohesive.

The vocals every now and then are a bit off tune.

Don't be discouraged ! If you are doing it all alone then keep at it !.
Best of luck
Moshe (Shailat)

Forgot something...........

If you want, send me a cd and I'll get you a bit of airplay
on Channel 7 -"Arutz Sheva".
They also boradcast on the web.

Oh I'd love that

Just tell me what address. You can email me at Chanale77@aol.com
Thanx so much

And your critiques are well appreciated. I'm just about done with a new one- but i have a cold so i have to wait until i can actually finish all the vocals.

As for James comment on the music sounding like backround music, you definitely have a point-It almost sounds like I'm doing kareoke. Thing is, In these two last songs I used my keyboard more than ever. What happens is that I "mix" the keyboard tracks b4 i dump them into the br8. Only then do I record vocals. So I actually cant tweak each sound to "envelope" the vocals. I mean i can't say can't but it's just harder.

Now for Shailat here's the thing- It's obvious you're a "maven" in recording so I appreciate your time. What do you mean compression on the whole mix? Add compression to each track?

Thanx so much everyone
Shana

PS YOU'RE MAKING ME WORK HARDER!! :)

Since you are using a programed synth you wont need compression, unless you are playing the rhythm parts yourself (as opposed to the synth doing it for you).
Of course this does make life easier but an automated synth rhythm, tends to be rather static dynamicly so
there is a trade off here........

If you can balance the keyboard mix well, then compress the vocals if needed only.
This will help them sit in the mix better. Then if the mix needs it compress lightly. In your song that I heard it needed it. But then again your vocals were to loud.

The Eq suggestion was of course for the vocals alone. Dont process the whole mix with that cut and boost I wrote about.

Dont forget a bit of pedelay on your reverb for your vocals as well.

PS YOU'RE MAKING ME WORK HARDER!! :)

Remember - you can't say "can't" :)

I'm posting this here as I had sent you an email and got back a "who the hell are you" :).

Once you get in touch with me I will make the conection to the radio andl set up for you an interveiw on the radio and have them put your CD on the playlist.
