I figured it was time for an uptempo song - so here is a rock tune called Come Let Me Love You. This was mixed down using my new Event TR8N monitors (Christmas present :D ). I'd appreciate any feedback you can give me on the mix.

Nice, upbeat tune, ido. Sounds like there is a lot of kick going on. Drums are a bit heavy on the low end, to me. Could use more mids, and maybe even more highs. I hear the cymbal, but it seems to fade pretty quick. Kick thumps.
Song has a ZZ Top type vibe. I'd like to hear it with a bit less really low end, and more mids.

Fantastic tune, I love it, this one is getting downloaded. :) :) :)

The song writing aspect is great in my opinion, great lyrics in the realm of keeping it real!
The volume of the vocals fluctuates slightly here and there, minor!
The guitar tone is so warm and fuzzy very ZZ Topish, also it reminds me of The Steve Miller Bands tune: "Keep on Rocking" That's a compliment!

The guitars could have the mids and highs notched up a touch!
The guitar solo was very fitting for the tune, very well written, I heard the melody line of the song emulated in the guitar solo, which was great! The volume on the guitar in the solo in my opinion could have been bought forward in the mix ever so slightly.

The drums could have more in the mids on the snare and kick drum and less decay on the cymbals.

Overall ido1957 I absolutely loved it. The songwriting and playing is great and a real pleasure to listen too! You have a talent there that I look forward to hearing more of.

I hope the (constructive) criticism is of help to you!
I know when working on your own tunes it is very hard sometimes to separate yourself from your creation and pick out the small nuances that can make the world of difference!

I love your voice! And the lyrics are great too.

I think the recording is good on it. Anyway my ears loved it!!

Dogman - Many thanks for listening, I always look forward to your reviews. I think you're right - too much bottom end. I just uploaded a revised mix. I took some of the bottom end off the mix as suggested. The link on the first post is the same or just click on my sig below and pick Come Let Me Love You (first tune in the list). If you get a chance to listen to the remix, please let me know if this is more like it.....

Gorty - Thanks for listening, and thanks for the positive feeedback. I really appreciate the details you have provided. I'm comparing (in my head) the tracking and mix settings I used with the suggestions you made. I can see where my levels/eq settings would result in the things you mentioned (*storing for future reference*). There's a newer version up if you have a chance to review.....
 
True - thanks for listening and the kind feedback. I'm glad you like it! Lots of little things I can see/hear changing (see Dogman and Gorty's reviews above) but I'm glad it has a good initial impact. I was aiming for a rockin' feel......
 
Much better dude. Still a bit heavy in the lows, but not as much. I'd say to bring the music up a bit, to be more even with the voice. The vocals are good, so don't bury them. Maybe take the lows down a little more, and try and compress the whole mix, a small amount. Might even out the overall sounds. Just be carefull not to bury the vocals too much.

I agree with the ZZtop references.
Mind you the tubthumping reminded me a little of the Glitter Band. Maybe a bit too thuddish on the bass drum. It worked for the GB but their arrangements/sound weren't as full as yours.

I am always looking at what else is up on a persons site to listen too. My ears loved the second song call " IN HER EYES " it reflects that you have love in your life , your voice, and your heart. Reminds me of the 60 & 70's where everything was peace and easy living, not all the BS I see now. But hay dude you have that good mind set in your song now. It must be me and not being in touch with the good times, as I was back then. Anyway that song is a good sound and it just jumps out for a loving hug. Your voice has that unusual sound that is different in a special way. At least to me.

Dogman - thanks for the relisten. Glad to hear the second mix is better. I took out some lows at around 113HZ (about 4db) and 56HZ (about 1.5 db) that I had oiginally put in. I'm mixing this off an ADAT (not ITB) so back to the basement for a new mix using all the valuable info I've gotten. I think the bass drum is a bit hot but it's not on it's own channel. So hopefully I can pull out some of that using eq. Try to keep the drive but lose some of the thump.

Rayc - thanks for the listen and the ZZTOP reference. My guitar chain is:
84(ish) Kramer Pacer->Roland GP-8 (comp/smiley eq/delay)->Marshall JCM900/4100. I think the guitar has Seymore Duncans - whatever's stock.
I caught your tunes man - they're great - see my comments on your GIMLI thread.

Choctaw - thanks for the listen. Glad you liked "In Her Eyes". It was a first take that I thought turned out pretty well (vocally). I'm looking to add some instrument parts to improve it, and it still needs some mixing work.
 
Hey this is great! I don't want to sound too redundant, but this really does remind me of ZZ Top. I love the straight ahead catchy rock feel of this. Your voice is great too. Very catchy tune.

I love the drum sound, feels like a danceable tune. Makes me want to move... makes me want to slither.

Is there a bass guitar in there too? Or is that the drums providing the bass?

Good stuff, enjoyed it ;)

Just revisited your click site & listened to the "back catalogue".
Overtime really rocks along. With a few changes in arrangement or mix it'd be prime BTOverdrive.
Mind you your arrangement has more meat than BTO ever had.

Great song, Ido. Very cool rock vibe. Ever sincs Llarion mixed one of your songs, your tunes are sounding great. This one sounds pro. Great playing, too.
 
Excellent stuff! Reminds me of zztop but even more like Heart with a male vocalist.

Not much to nitpick here, top job and its tight. I have never been a big fan of the fuzz sound, but maybe thats me.

Voice sounds like Eric Clapton a bit :) Yup, good stuff, well done.
 
I agree with most of what's been said so far. More mids in the drums. I can't distinguish the bass from the rhythm guitar most of the time.

Despite what a lot of guys say, I don't like the guitar tone. Still too harsh for my taste. Add an ambient mic in the room and mix that in just a hair... it should smooth out the "close speaker" sound. What are you using as a mic preamp? Also boost some mids and get some meat in that tone. Or maybe you just don't have the JCM turned up very loud yet. What can I say, though? I'm not a huge Marshall fan anymore, but you should be able to get a bigger sound than that.

On the guitar solo, I need more highs for clarity. The guitar sounds processed... not very organic at all.

Cymbals - are they gated? I'd like to hear a little (a lot) more decay from them. Your toms are totally lost in the mix, and the snare needs just a little more ring for my taste. I'd think a small drum plate reverb would help here.

I think the vocals might be a little too high in the mix. It's especially evident when the singer isn't singing. Maybe duck the rest of the mix when the singer is singing, but bring it back up when he's not singing. A little more compression in the vocal will help it punch more without having to be so much louder than everything else.
 
Cool song Mr. idoZZ57. The vocal's really a top notch performance.

Something about the guitar sound... it has a good character but it sounds over compressed - sounds almost like it's pumping rapidly in level.

Snakedog - thanks for listening. Slithering is definitely encouraged with this one! My bass playing friend (Mike) is neck deep in work right now. He has a few tunes to add his magic to then it will be a complete remix job from there. I'll probably remix anyway before that - I'd like to try and apply the many good suggestions I've received from everyone on this.

rayc - appreciate your feedback on Overtime. BTO was a rockin' band - Not Fragile was a great album! That version was a collab. between myself and a fabulous bass player/drummer/mixer/keyboard player/etc. known around these parts as Llarion. At his suggestion we put together a pretty rockin' version of the tune. I learned a lot about mixing from him on that one. I've learned a bunch more from everyone else here at hr.com too.

BTW - where is that Llarion guy - haven't heard from him lately....

RAMI - thanks for the listen and the positive feedback. I agree, Llarion really helped me get started in the right direction. I still have lots to learn and continue to get lots of great ideas from this forum - listening and reading the comments on the various songs. For example - your strat playing has encouraged me to pull my strat out and start using it again. Now if I could only play all those instruments as well as you do! Nice job on the song with 7String!

DavidK - thanks for taking the time to listen. Glad you enjoyed the tune. The references to ZZ top/Heart/Clapton are much appreciated (as he falls to his knees and chants "not worthy", "not worthy". Actually, I have a poster of EC on my basement wall where I practice for inspiration. Really looking forward to your collab with Tim too....

dkerwood - great comments and suggestions which I will try to answer here....
Guitar - my preamp is just my Alesis Studio 24 board. I mentioned my guitar chain above. The room mic is something I've heard about and need to try. I turned down the mids on the guitars slightly to allow for the vocals which were slightly boosted in the same frequency - I think 1.5-2k but it's not super precise on the board. The leads were not cut in those frequencies - just flat on the board so that gives room for some more highs for clarity next time (*taking notes throughout here*).
Cymbals - not gated but can be adjusted, and I do have a plate drum patch on my reverb that I can try.
Vocals - were mentioned before that they were a touch hot. I'll take those down a touch - or music up as Dogman suggested too. The compressor I'll add as I mix down which might help. (I'll check out your latest after work too)

Tim - idoZZ57 - thought that was a typo at first (d'oh). Thanks for the compliments! As I mentioned with "In Her Eyes", I've been working on vocals trying to get some strength and range. The guitar probably has a lot of compressor on the tracking both from the amp's dirty channel and the footpedal/processor I use. Could also be the multi-band compressor I'm using on the mixdown too (which I like but probably overuse - typical newb - will look at that). Looking forward to listening to your recent post (and upcoming collab with DavidK) but can't at work...later though...
