Color/Coloration...?

I keep hearing this and it sounds obvious, but I'm not sure what peeps mean by this? For example balh blah adds coloration ect..
I tired of pretending I know what their saying and not being "sure".

Czar might want audio examples and reviews, but Im gonna try anyway.....

Coloration actually is distortion.....when you think distortion, you usually think of nasty harshness and clipping....but distortion is actually any change of the original waveform, if that makes since...for instance, a preamp like the M-Audio DMP2 is very clean....what goes in comes out.....now a preamp like the Art Tube Pre can be used in certain ways to get a nice warm crispy sound that, while it is distorted, is very pleasing to the ear on certain tracks (this track would be colored)....

this is just a very elementary explaination of coloration, but may get you on the way of understanding.....

I don't know if that makes sense.

If you record noise through a chain, it should sound exactly the same as the noise in your room when played back,

but mics and preamps and compressors color the noise. Some make it more bassy than the actual noise in your room, some add high end, some make it really warm. One thing I like is warm noise.

Some make it more midrangeysome scoop out the mids. So when you play it back you're like "hmm the noise is my room does not sound quite like that.
