Suppose I lay down a track of a song and want you to lay down the next rack and send the product back to me. You live in Maine and I live in california. Have you all exhausted this subjecty before?

If I had to do it today with no input, I would assume you would need to make a CD with one track, then PHYSICALLY MAIL (gross!)
the CD to me, I would load it onto my machine, lay down track 2, etc. Surely this has been thought out and there's a purely electronic way to do it?

Would both of us have to own a Fostex? Same model?

I think I'm a senior member here now due to the high number of posts I have made. They don't judge the quality of the posts in promoting you to senior, but I'll have to demand some extra respect from you young whipper snappers from this point forward. Thank you.

Now, where's my rheumatiz medicine?

Collaborations are a great idea! I've never heard them spoken about before.

With the VF80, VF160, if a developing song was saved to CD in the FDMS-3 format, then, after mailing, it could be uploaded into someone else's machine (with fader/eq settings registered) with more tracks to be added. Using FDMS-3 there are a few issues if you want to go from a VF80 to a VF160, but it's doable.

On the other hand, saving tracks in the wav format should have no issues (I wouldn't think). Wav files should be usable across lots of different machines (again, I would think).

mr8 collab

gospel: thanks, friend. I listened to the collaboration and it was pretty impressive. I'm a little fuzzy on how you physically got it accomplished, though.

Bill, I understand the mailed CD route, and considered it. I want to learn to do it both ways. A friend on another forum suggested I could make an mp3 chez moi, e mail it to you or just message you to go download it off the net and on to your recording/mixing program on your computer (cakewalk comes to mind -- I realize you don't have that) and put that mp3 on one track, then you add what you want at your station. Supposedly all these recording programs (cooledit is another) permit this procedure.

I know what you're thinking, Bill: 1) you don't put your music on your computer -- I know because I have the physical evidence (your excellent CD) in my hand; and 2) you have a Fostex, not cooledit.

Welllllll, you know you've been wanting to learn this mp3 business for while, so if you are interested, I'd be happy to pursue this with you. We can of course swap CD's in the mail, but I also need to learn to make collaborative mp3's over the net. If you're interested, let me know and we'll pursue it. You can download CD rippers for free over the net, put your Fostex-made CD in the computer, rip to mp3, and then make the mp3 available to others either by posting it at nowhere radio, or, like me, you can set up your own little website if you haven't already done so, and post the mp3 on that site. Then (whew!) you'd have to get cooledit or something similar, as I understand it, or at least I would (I guess you would not need to if you initiate the project with fostex and I complete with cooledit, unless you want it pingponged back to you electronically for your own editing. )

I'm not trying to drag you into a commitment, as we are all short of time these days, but I'll be developing the idea on my end. Just let me know, and FYI, as you may remember, I am pretty open in terms of what I think you may contemplate in terms of content.

bdbdbuck: didn't mean to ignore you in my last post, friend -- we posted simultaneously. Kudos (what is a kudo?) to you also on the fine mr 8 collaboration.

I am happy to listen to how it was done (who posted/mailed what first to whom, etc.) if you want to re-live the moments.

The MR8 collab was done by mailing cd's. Flat-9 and I did a collab recently where he just mailed his CF card to me. I'm also doing some stuff with my daughter where I'm downloading MP3 files and converting them back to .wav files to work on tracks where I will burn a cd to mail back to her with seperate tracks so that there won't be any synch problems. There seems to be plenty of ways to do this thing, but if you don't have cable the transfer takes too long and you're better off just mailing the tracks.

OK, we're still simul-posting! The way it went down... if I remember corectly is, I did a basic acoustic track with vox and e-mailed it to clif and kd and I did a YM transfer (yahoo messenger). Clif then did the bass and drum tracks and mailed me a cd, and went on vacation to Hawaii.... the tracks were mp3 instead of .wav.... Back then, I didn't know you could just convert the files so I devised a concoction to use the files anyway (don't ask). After I got my parts done another YM to KD and he did the vocals and mailed me the cd.... somehow clif ended up doing the final mix, so I'm obviously confused here but I think I'm pretty close. Keith, correct me where I'm wrong here!!!

.wav files is the easiest way to go. If you have an FTP server (or access to one) you can load them up onto that...

Sounds right to me. At least that is the way I remember it. The last several months have been a blur to me. Try doing 52 bookings in 17 weekends and working a fulltime job.
By the way, I'm ready to do another collab whenever you are. We have a couple of months break and, if you'll remember, I have added a mixer and studio mic that I didn't have when we did the other collab.

1. I want in.

2. What is Yahoo messenger? Is that different from e-mail?

With Yahoo Messenger you can send a file while chatting at the same time. With dial up it really makes those long downloads go faster. I don't think it is exactly faster just less boring.

kd,
I just finished a new CCM tune that I think you would do a great job on...

rob,
I'm very much into a collab with you guys and gladly offer up this new tune, unless someone else has something.

I recorded a real rough acoustic version over the weekend, if you guys are interested, just e-mail me or PM me.

Hey, I'll certainly happily consider any collaborative thing, and feel honored to be asked. BUT, know that while I love music, and can hear what sounds good (I think), I am NOT a musician. However, my son is, and I'd make him collaborate on guitar, or voice or even in writing harmonious notes when needed... He's good.

I'm game. However, when I mixed the live project we just finished I think I deleted YM to make room. I can't believe I thought I would never fill a 20gb HD. I'm shopping for a new pc right now and it will have no less than a 80gb.

Hey Buck, I just listened to your " Long Time Dry".. Man thats a cool tune...

Nice collaboration....

The organ was sweet, vocals and guitar sounded great, a longer guitar solo would of been better though... hehe

:)

Thanks Kelly, that tune is nowhere near done yet. I just put it up so Ralph could hear the lead break and get some sense of where I'm going with it... I don't want to embarrass him because he's so much better than I am! Thanks again, It'll have quite a bit more guitar when it's done.

kd, I burned a bunch of CD's the other day and got rid of a bunch of stuff on my HD too.... music files eat up a bunch of space! Let me know when you get back up and running w/ YM and we'll do a transfer.

bill, welcome aboard man.... we'll find a spot for ya somewhere! Do you have YM?

Are ya still there Rob?

I'm adding the finishing touches to the live project. When I get finished I'll dump it to CD to free up some space and give you an email. I won't be getting the new pc till after Christmas.

Hello all -- didn't get a chance to post "yestiddy," but yes I'm still interested. I sing okay harmony in the baritone and tenor (low) range and play classical and steel string acoustic guitar. If you already have a project in the works, point me where you want and I'll give my best effort on one of those instruments or voices.

I don't have YM, but it doesn't matter since I still don't know what it does or how it relates to collaborations. I do have DSL internet service so downloading and uploading are fast for me.

Meanwhile, tell me what instruments or voices you all play and I'll be thinking of my own project to initiate.

Finally, I assume that the project leader for whatever collaboration will have cakewalk etc. to mix the final product, convert to .mp3, and post the link thereto here, right?
