I'm a recording/programmer hobbyist (don't do much of the latter anymore), but I've had some spare time recently, and thought maybe this would be a good project to work on.

My idea is to create a collaboration forum/software for musicians to work on projects together...send files, transfer one entire project to someone else in their group, and possibly even converting one project format to another (say, a Cubase project to a Sonar project).

Basically what some people do in the MP3 mixing clinic, except this would make it a lot easier for people to work on projects together without uploading a zip file of their whole project, and having people download them, create a new project, etc.

This would handle it all automatically.

Also options for buddy lists, instant messages, and some other cool stuff like that.

What do you think? Would anyone here actually use it? Would I be wasting my time? It would be a rather big project to do on my own but it shouldn't take too long.

So, hopefully I'll get enough replies and maybe I'll develop this.

I've been looking for a place like this and i even posted a thread on this forum asking if such a place existed. I think it's a great idea and i for one would use it. You could eventually create user profiles where we can find personal info about influences, projects worked on before, and maybe a rep. point attribution system as well..just an idea. I'd like to wait and see where you'll go with this.

Thanks Berberman, I'm glad someone liked the idea.

The profiles thing is a good suggestion and definitely possible. Also the reputation system could be done pretty easily.

Another thing, is my program would have support for FLAC files (lossless compressed WAVs). Meaning, file sizes would be cut down a lot compared to Winzip/WinRAR, and there would be no quality loss. So transferring files would take close to half the time as it would just zipping a project and sending it to someone (the WAVs would be compressed/decompressed automatically when being transferred).

I'm hoping to get some more feedback on this, so I welcome anymore ideas/suggestions you, or anyone else, might have.

You know i'm really surprised this doesn't get much attention and feedback. I would think it's in every active musician's interest to find a place like this, and we're in the Homerecording.com forum..go figure..

A friendly bump to check on how things went with your project...

I know have my home recording studio setup and ready to go
