Cole Clark - Recorded Direct - Opinions?

Hi, I'm Rob & I'm new to Home Recording dot Com.

I thought I?d share a recording I made using my acoustic guitar (Cole Clark FL1ac ? cheapest model I think). The guitar was plugged directly (via audio converter) into Cubase 5.

Usually I don?t like the sound of piezo equipped guitars recorded directly but unexpectedly found myself being able to live with the sound of the Cole Clark recorded direct - which would have to be a first for me!!! Curious about your opinions here.

Would also very much appreciate your thoughts and comments on the recording, playing, composition, etc.

 
Wow. Some pretty skillfull playing there dude. Well done.

Not my kind of thing stylistically (too soothing ;)), but a very good sound you have there.

The only thing that bugged me a little was the string squeak from your fingers changing position. It either became more pronounced towards the end or I just picked up on it then. Anyway, if you could minimize that it might help.

Hey, thanks for the feedback heatmiser - much appreciated. I'm definitely going to have to get something to minimize the string squeak!!! Thanks for the warm welcome also.
 
i like it. it works for the style. a bit too much verb, but it's all good. the track is way mellow, so it's okay. it just sits in a different space than the other things.

The piano is obviously keyboard, but it doesn't distract. There are popping noises around 1:30-1:45. ah on another listen, it's string noise. maybe roll off a little more on the reverb's highs.

this isn't exactly a track that i would expect people to intently listen to. it would be in the background to something. weather channel, making out with middle aged women, elevators...or maybe a combination of a couple of those.
 
Is that sound package roughly the same as the Maton AP Mic? Maybe cut the piezo mid sweep to zero...if it isn't already, to de-squeek a bit.....or lotion up yer fingers? I didn't have a big problem with it...but you're moving really fast, and it's a high-freq 'zip' that can be annoying, I think.

The composition ....the snip is a solo. Real nice one. But some changes in the progression, and an organized , melodic copulation with the piano, first, would be nice as a launch-pad, no? Reminded me a lot of TE's 'The Robin' That where those licks came from? Good work!
 
Well, Two instruments should have musical sex: unison, counterpoint, organization, surprise..dirty-talk.......before one of them leaps around the bedroom admiring his own junk, while she just lays there, bored, with her legs open. The gentleman wanted comment on the composition: it's incomplete! MHO

No idea if the sound package is roughly the same as a Maton AP Mic - I do know there are no mics on the Cole Clark FL1ac though ? it has two pickups, one under the saddle and another under the soundboard somewhere I think ? it has a control to blend the two to varying degrees.

I remember the strings were incredibly dry when I recorded this piece ? I had just gotten home with my new acoustic guitar and was very eager to make a test recording. Mmmm, lotion on the fingers sounds real good. I have subsequently replaced the strings (with Elixers) and the problem seems to have gone away.

Glad you liked the snip. And yes, I just recorded some soloing over a very basic chord progression (3 chords descending in diatonic 3rds in the key of D major i.e. B-, G Maj, E-). I agree that ?melodic copulation with the piano? would definitely be a ?nice launch-pad? ? absolutely yes and thanks for the suggestion. Sorry, I?m not familiar with TE?s ?The Robin? ? the licks were straight outta me actually ? I was kinda just feeling the 'gravity' of the F# note using a scalar approach of the B- section and over G Maj9 and E ?9 was thinking arpeggios, pentatonic, bends etc.

String squeak is a natural part of acoustic guitar playing. Listen to Tommy Emmanuel.

Nice mellow music to my ears. I like the piano sounds.

I guess my only nit would be it needs a little more musical variation in the chord sequence.

Thanks 4 the link. Yes, just like most guitar players, I’m familiar with TE (just wasn’t familiar with ‘The Robin’) – TE is a wonderful musician ….. I just checked out the Robin link and gotta say it’s VERY COOL !!! DIG IT :) Such a beautiful piece – I quite like the way it goes Phrygian dominant @ 1:37

Actually I need to listen to more music - I haven't listened to much over the last 15 years - really just getting back into playing again as well - kinda went off track there for a while (understatement). And yes, I’m definitely an Aussie (from Canberra – a sleepy little country town in the southern highlands of NSW - just outside of Queanbyan:).
