Coaxial Vs. Stereo plugs.....?

I did a search to try and figure out what the coaxial cable is used for and/or when would you want to use it. My sampler has an in/out I believe and my 8-track recorder only has a coaxial output. But when would I want to use or why. My bad if this may have been explained recently, but I couldnt find any threads really stating exactly when or why I would want to use a coaxial cable. Any feedback would be dope, peace..........pm
 
the only instance i can think of to use coax cable in music would be to sync word clocks....it might be an ADAT interface :confused: (never used adat so i don't know how the wires are, maybe its coax)
 
"Post the recorder " ya mean the brand/type?, LOL.... If that is what you mean I have a Tascam 788 multitrack recorder and I have a Rolands mc-909 Groovebox/sampler. Again the Tascam has the coaxial output and the 909 has a in/out.....thanx pm
 
'K - The 788 has a standard RCA type II S/PDIF (Stereo, probably non-AC3 compatible which is no big deal anyway) output only. Which is great if you have a soundcard with a S/PDIF in (such as a Phillips 706 or Echo MIA).

From what I understand, the 909 has RCA S/PDIF in AND out. So, you could theoretically record onto the 788 and make a straight digital transfer to the 909, but not the other way around.

Of course, make sure you're using actual coax S/PDIF cable, as opposed to regular RCA cables. While they (RCA) work, sort of, over short distances, they're not shielded properly for digital signals. I believe there's an impedance mismatch also.

Thanx man, . Thats acutally kinda cool. I do have the proper cable(coaxial) believe. I bought it while back thinkin I might actaully be able to use it some day. I'll give it try, for real, thanx........pm

By the way - Make sure your sample rates are the same, and one unit will have to be the "master clock" for the other... It's all in your settings somewhere...

Otherwise, clicks and pops are in store.
