I´m finishing my studio, and i wanna build a cloud for my drums...

I was wondering if i should use high density rigid fiberglass (like 50 kg/m3) or i can use some spear fluffy wool i already have... (i guess is 23 kg/m3?)...

I´m not sure if the cloud if supposed to work as a bass trap, or is just a way to stop waves from hitting the ceiling and coming back to mics...

Thanks!

The cloud acts as a Broad band absorber, meaning, you want it to absorb as much frequencies across the entire spectrum as possible. It in effect removes the ceiling acoustically and makes the sounds appear to the mics as though the ceilings are much higher.

By using the light density fiberglass, you will only absorb the higher frequencies.
You will want to use the more dense fiberglas to absorb the full range.

Actually the rigid (depending on how dense) only absorbs efficiently to about 150 hz or so then it becomes increasingly less effective below that. For that reason sometimes folks will build bass traps (in addition to the clouds) to absorb the lower frequencies.

Hope that helps some.

Great! Thanks Tom...
I´m building some bass traps too, hoping that my tiny room could sound good.
Is a 4x2,4x2,2 mts. gypsum room... I´m planning to build 8 bass traps + 1 or 2 clouds... Can wait to hear how good sounds the room! :D

I was having a lot of problems with cymbals, they just seemed too loud and kind of harsh. I made a cloud (actually looks more like a big hanging pillow) by using a wooden frame, 6'X7', covered with fairly thin cloth, and a layer of insulation (6" of the fluffy pink stuff) then another layer of cloth on top, added eye screws to the corners and hooks in the celing and hung this over the drums. This really cut the harshness of the cymbals and made the whole room seem quieter. I don't know what you want your cloud to do, this is what a big puffy one does, hope it helps you decide what you need.

Hey Dani! 6x7´ seems to be a massive cloud! I was planning to use 2x4´!
My ceiling is pretty low, so i wanna hang a cloud to avoid weird reflections and have a nicer image of my cymbals... (my lovely A Customs! :D )

Do you have any pics to share?
Thanks!

Try to use at least 4" and gap about the same. If you could swing 2 panels(2X4'), it would be better. It doesn't have to be one large one.

I can hang 2 clouds (2x4´), but i was thinking 2" with 2" of air gap... My ceiling is pretty low, so i think that´s the best i can do...

It´s the same design i´m gonna use for bass traps... 2" + 2" air gap... What do you think?
