to begin - I have searched and read these forums as well as browsing the net before posting...:)

I have an open inset closet space that I am going to convert to a vocal recording booth. Luckily the closet is near the back of my house so outside noise is not likely hurt the recording. I manily would like to isolate the vocals so I can monitor through speakers while recording.

My plan is to build a "sound proof" wall to enclose the closet. I was thinking of particale board then old carpet and sleeping bags then another sheet of particle board (low budget). If I can isolate a majority of the sound I should still be able to monitor through speakers.

Ventilation is going to be handled by running a large tube(like a clothes dryer's air exhaust) and attaching a fan to bring in fresh air. I know this may lead to some noise but thats ok with me. Another tube will also help by moving air out.

Questions: Has anyone done any similar projects? Maybe a little friendly advice on where to start? Materials to use on a low budget?

What about a door? Will the door be the weak link?

What about a small viewing window? plexiglass?

Thanks for any help!

helpful hints from the young

i am only 15 but in the 3 years in recording i have absorbed allot
i was wondering how big this closet is.... cuz if its 2 thing i hate as a vocalist is being crampt when trying to unleash (i like to move my arms a bit)
as for the door.. yes its gonna be a problem but theres a solution...at any door/window store they will have soundproof doors.
before i built my studio in my basement i used to use my small bathroom to record vocals.. so whatever u cna do.. do it..

Thanks for the reply.

I feel you, I want a nice area to record in, not feeling cramped. That's a good point to make.

The closet is 33 inches deep. The booth will be wider though since I will extend the wall. I think I will extend the width by a door's length. Then build my enclosing wall.

Here's a sketch.

I'm just brainstorming/researching things now. But any feedback would be appreciated.:D

Thanks.
