Dude, in a mix they would be entirely different, and would totally change way freq's complimented and or walked on each other. There really is a pretty good difference there, the modded one seeming smoother and or warmer, sorry you dont hear it. I think now that MF has them for $150 including the mxl 603s, that its a pretty good deal to have modded. I want to hear the Royer mod, too.

Well, I do hear the 2nd one being a little "warmer"...or what I call a little more bump around 200 hz...as a guess for freqs...and I haven't lived under a rock to not know about [additive or] subtractive EQing in mixing either (to make space, for instance)....
eh [tube]Dude??:D
btw, I think I have seen that combo mentioned as cheap as $129 in some catalog...even with da shockmount.... American Musical Supply...maybe.
well....off to get the Qtips:p

So, bottom line, I have an MXL 2001 that came with the 603s because the pack was cheap, I am an amature doing home recording and I wanted to record just my acoustic guitar and some vocals. It seemed like a great deal to me for what I was looking for and it has turned out to be pretty decent. Anyway, I am not gifted enough to do the mod but, as an amature, I would like to know how to get a better sound out of the 2001, ie. what type of EQing or positioning would be best to get better than stock vocals out of the 2001. I have noticed that boosting the lows and putting a sharp drop in the highs gives it a slightly better sound but what do you guys think. I'm just an unknowledged dog trying to get a bone here. I use the 2001 into a Behringer mixer and then into my crappy ass SB Audigy (lets not get into that right now, I don't have the cash to spend on a new one yet) and then run the whole thing into Sonar XL. Any help would be great.

listen in the quiet section before he starts playing in the first clip and then listen to the quiet section in the second clip the second clip seems to have now lost its harshess and brittle top end also the background noise is a little less evedent the second time round
