Clipping Problem

Ive been using an 840 for a few months. Its been fine up untill now. For some reason the volume is real low and muddy and when I raise the levels it starts to clip. This happens with alot of things but especialy bass and bass drums. I cant get the level to sound loud and clear without some massive distortion. Is there anyone whos had this problem or who knows what may be causing it?

Ok Dan, what has changed in the chain? have you added new gear or taken any out? new mic, cables or effects? Is there any equiptment difference from now to befor when all was well? Thats the first stage here. If there is nothing new in the setup... you have a problem that I am clueless about.

hmmm, I experiened the same problem, which I fixed by the way, by adding a second mic!

I am not techie,so I dont know why this fixed it, but it fattened my guitar sound quite a bit, with out clipping.

However, I have run into a secondary problem along the same lines, with my 1680...

I record my guitar and it sounds fine while I am recording and all the levels look good..but then when I add some delay to it from the effex cards, I start getting some clipping type problems (getting thatclipping hiss/static) on my low notes, but the levels are still in range....why is it doing this????

I'm not an expert on clipping, but I'm not sure what you mean when you say "clipping hiss/static". Clipping is when the levels go over 0dB on a digital recording as far as I know. If you are just getting some extra hiss/static when adding effects, then that is something different I think. From my experience the noise level of my tracks always goes up whenever I do any kind of EQ or effects on a track. I especially notice it when I use the Roland built in effects card. I think that is a common thing. If it really is clipping when you add an effect from the Roland card, then it's possible the single effect patch you add has lots of effects contained within it, possibly some that raise the volume of the track or add EQ that pushes you over the edge. I've seen EQ cause clipping in Soundforge when I was close to 0 dB and just made a minor increase. Just some things to check, hope it helps.
