clicking noise

When recording with Cool Edit, without playing any sounds on my computer, it gives a straight clean line. Cool!

Then when I play something using Windows Media Player/Real Player, it picks up the recording BUT it is ALSO picking up some interference - clicking noises every few seconds. I don't know what is causing this because I've even muted other aux items. UNCOOL!

I have searched and searched for a solution to my problem but cannot find a solution! I even played around with the settings to experiment but no luck.

What could be the problem?

Somebody here knows the answer to this question, but I don't think it's me.

What you're saying is that when you record absolute silence (like just your soundcard with no inputs), it's fine and it plays back fine in cooledit...then after you've saved it AS A 16 BIT FILE and played it in something else, that same silent file has pops and crackles in it?

If you're recording in 32 bit, and you save it as a 32 bit file, it'll make that noise in mediaplayer/winamp and other players. They can handle 16 bit, they can handle mp3's just fine, but try to play back a 24 or a 32 bit file, and it'll distort like crazy.

Yes, when I record absolute silence ( soundcard with no inputs), it's fine and it plays back fine in cooledit. No clicking.

But when I play and record at the same time, I encounter clicking noises in my recording. I am positive these clicking noises are not present in the original audio file.

I am recording in 16-bit and I did not save the file for playback. I played it directly from cool edit right after recording.

You really should be recording in 32 bit, but that's a seperate topic.

Is there anyway you could post a sample? Hearing the clicking might help identify it.
