Cleaning up old recordings

I have some very old, very noisy/scratchy recordings that I'd like to clean up. Does anyone have ideas on how to best accomplish this?

Well I have been doing that very thing for years. If you have a half decent sound card, (an old 16bit sound blaster will do)there is a program called Gold Wave that you can down load for free. This is a too good to be true program. But it is becoming my main stay for analog audio restoration.
FEATURES:
R & L independant track magnification, very useful for removing clicks.

Record and play controls.

Insert silence

Force to silence

Can load wave and other supported formats.

I've come across Steinberg Clean! It's a fairly easy program to use simply because it is slider based, and previews in real time. Essentially, all you have to do is listen for what you think is the right sound. A de-clicker (for pops and scratches; a de- noiser for 'air'; and bass/brilliance controls. Trust me for things like this, it's the best I've come across....I've found that other programs that provide this function are toooooo slow. If you can get it; it's worth it...There used to be a free download site....If I find it in my mess of papers I'll hit you up with another post
