Im trying to clean up a fostec m-80 I just got yesterday....the service manual says the same solution can be used for rubber pinch roller as well as the capstan...both are pretty nasty...my radio shack is clueless, any idea what kind of home remedy I can used which will not dry out or crack the rubber on the pinch roller?

the capstan is pitted pretty bad but it still sounds pretty good...

Just want to give it a good going over before I start having fun. So far I am pretty impressed with this unit...

i need to score the right ampex 457 so for now Im usimg Maxwell 35- 90 .

Thats what the previous owner used and I have two reels which were still in cellophane.

Just want to test drive it before I score new tape for it...Im I making a mistake with the 35-90 tape?

I'm not so sure you should use the same solution on the pinch roller as you would the capstan. A simple solution of dish soap with water on a rag will work wonders on the pinch roller.

Depending on how hard you are pushing the tape and/or what you are looking for from it depends on whether or not you will be happy with the Maxell tape. I would say that the Maxell tape is an excellent consumer level tape, but I'm not so sure it would be the preferred choice for laying down critical music and master tracks on. I would probably suggest the RMG SM911 or the SM900, depending on what your machine is biased for.

Hope that gives you a good start and points you in the right direction.;)

Clevo, as you know, no SM900 or SM911 for your 80...you are on the right track with 457 or better yet (because it can be had new fresh stock) RMGI LPR35.

Plain water is good for the pinch roller. If it is stubborn to get clean then use a dilute solution of water and window cleaner or water and mild soap like jjones said.

Capstan is PITTED?? Can you put up a pic?

Sorry.:o I was originally going to suggest the LPR-35, but I'm not familiar with Fostex machines.:p
