Hi,
I just bought a used Tascam 424mkII. I see that the manual recomends demagnetizing it occasionally. Will a battery operated cassette demagnetizer (Radioshack, $12) work OK? Or do I really need the $60 one that Tascam sells.

Thanks, Andy

If you are talking about a Radio-shack unit that looks like a cassette tape, I would avoid those all together.

If it is a wand style, electrical, plug into the wall type unit, (like the TEAC/TASCAM one), it should be usable in that those can be aimed at all the parts in the path such as guides, posts and capstan shafts.

Learn the procedure completely from the manuals and have a clear, un-distracted mind when you are doing the procedure.

Cheers! :)

I don't wanna hijack this thread, but how does this one match up to the Tascam one?

From what I understand of the Han-d-mag, it is supposed to be the best of it kind in demagnetizes. Not cheap either!!
