"clean" screaming vocals

When ever I record a heavy,grunge type band that has loud vocals I dont sem to get a result I'm happy. I've tried lots of compression, mic up close/far away. Different mic angles etc. I dont ever seem to get rid of pop and what sounds to me like distortion. I use typically a Rode NTV tube mic throught a Telefunkem V72a preamp then to a compressor, ashly or DBX. straight into an Alesis HD 24. Jim,
 
I'm wondering if the 'pop' might be the compressor kicking in? You here examples of this on almost any TV dialog, newscasts, etc.
Even if the sentence begins with "Ah" it has a 'putt' in front of it.


(I fear I am getting neurotic about this lazy f**kig abuse of compression. Isn't ear training great!?)

How high do you have your tube gain? Sometimes tube side gain will cause distortion. Definately get a pop filter if you haven't already. And try to position the mic just above mouth level, and try to "blow" your vocals downward out of the mic's trajectory.
 
yeah, get a -20db for any/all screaming vox. If i dont (with my C1, which i know is a hot hot hot mic) - i get mad distortion.
