By standalone, do you mean a dvd recorder that is not controlled by software and a computer? Last spring I bought a Pioneer Elite 7000 DVD recorder. The unit is a standalone that produces dvd video on dvd-r discs. You can hook it up to a TV monitor via RCA jacks and record using both RCA and firewire. The Pioneer is not exactly cheap (currently $599 at BH Photo Video) but it produces quality results and dvd-r's that can play on a wide variety of DVD players--at least everyone that I've tried, including a Phillips and an RCA. I use the DVD recorder to "mix down" video projects from my computer, a imac G4 800 running OSX 10.2 and Final Cut Express.
