I'm going to make my own instrumental Christmas Cd, and hopefully distribute it at christmas time to family, friends, ect. This will be the first album i will produce. my question is are christmas songs basically public domain??

Pre-1923 is usually safe.

Post-1923 is usually not. At least in the US.

It's not quite that simple, but it's a starting point. Most carols are safe. Most pop tunes aren't.

Oh, and one I've already done the legwork on: Pietro Yon's Gesu Bambino is now public domain.

thanks for the sites, i'm checking them out. The first one seems only to apply to distributing to the masses right, i'm GUESSING i should be allright if i distribute just to a few people

The first one was just for a "search engine" to find if a particular site is pub. domain. You could also license a non-pub. song if you want.

Public domain is public domain, whether you just give your mom a copy or distribute it to everyone in the world.
