Hi. You were asking me about running 1.2, 2.1 and Audition on the same machine, and I reported that it was problem-free.

I'd like to amend that report LOL.

I tried reinstalling 1.2 tonight, and both times I couldn't complete the reinstall, then it crashed Windows. So I uninstalled Audition and, lo and behold! I could install 1.2 slick as a whistle.

So, I'm leaving 1.2 on the machine for tracking and 2.1 on the machine for mixing, and Audition on the back-up disk for future use.

Dobro: what's the advantage of tracking with 1.2???
Just asking.
John

Hi elpee - I use 1.2 to track because it's so rock solid with my soundcard. When I track with 2.1, by contrast, there's a huge lag with each overdub - it's so big I can hear it. I've asked people about it, but most people don't get the lag, or don't know how to fix it. I sure don't know what to do about it. So I keep using 1.2.

One downside of this is how vulnerable it makes my system - to install 1.2 you absolutely need the original disk (copies won't work) - and if that disk gets broken or lost, I'm screwed. That'll be the point when I get a new soundcard and upgrade to XP.

Oh ho: I have an original 1.2 disk! But I don't have a latency problem with the soundcard I am using. I assume you know how to set the latency via the Device Properties/Wave In window. I guess this imposes a delay on your playback to match the latency so everything is dyin' in time. To calculate latency, record something like a handclap or a rim shot with a sharp attack, and then record from Track 1 to Track 2. When both tracks are played back together, you will hear an echo, which is the latency. I go to Edit View, blow up the waveform, and use the cursor to find the time of the exact beginning of the attack on Track 1. I then do the same to Track 2. Simple subtraction gives the amount of latency. Enter that number in the "Multitrack Latency"window, remembering that it uses milliseconds: i.e., if the difference between Track 1 and Track 2 is ".003", then you would enter "3" in the window. [I haven't used 1.2 for a long time so I don't remember if it had this capability -- and of course, Audition works the same way.]

Tough luck, pal.

I'm happy you can still install 1.2, but you should still get a new soundcard and upgrade to XP. In fact, let's just take a hint from Chris Harris and both buy new machines... :D

Yeah, but if I postpone all that, I can buy a new mic this year. A *nice* mic. ;)

Dudes, I am SOOOOOOOOOO FREAKING HAPPY I DID THAT, lol.

You know, there's not much of a reason for your average PC user to have a machine custom built anymore...Dell can do it cheaper if you're just checking email and browsing the web. You can get a decent machine for under $600 from Dell.

But we know recording is different.

THIS COMPUTER KICKS SO MUCH ASS, lol. :D

I tried to hang it up this morning...33 tracks, with the most cpu intensive plug I have (roomverb m2) bussed on all the tracks, then at least 2 plugs on each track. I couldn't make it skip. :D :D

FREE AT LAST!!!

So share your specs and price, please... :D
Honestly, I'm not sure about the specs. I know my Harddrive is about 200GB. My processor is over 2.5GHz...and I've got enough RAM to choke a camel, but that's about the extent of my knowledge. The case is quiet, and the CD burner is fast enough to break discs, lol.

$500 - I'm a cheap bastard. :D

"I've got enough RAM to choke a camel"

There you go, bragging about the size of your body parts again.

Don't believe a word of it, anyone.

What kind of processor is it?

How'd you score so much for such a little price? I was gearing up to purchase a new machine, cause mine doesn't have the specs to run new software packages that I'm interested in. But then I had to dump the cash on an engagement dream, and I'm back to the dreaming phase. But, I think I can rock $500, so please share your resources.

And to everyone reading, please create lots of threads addressed to me, and be sure to put my name in the title, I feel special everytime I see that. :D

I paypal'd a buddy of mine from another BBS (recordingproject.com) the scratch, and he built it. Keep in mind, that's ONLY the box - no monitor, keyboard, etc.

I'm trying to remember the name of the processor...it's not intel, it's the other one... "AMD" maybe? crap, I don't know.

HOWEVER...if you go here and vote for my daughter (jaimee harris) in this radio contest thingy, lol...I'LL FIND OUT!!! :D
