Choosing Monitors . .. ?

Hey guys,
I'm still a newbie, and still learning the ropes tracking with a Tascam 424. But, I need a pair of monitors to start trying to do some decent mixes.

Can anyone recommend some decent first time speakers, around $300. and under .. . I'm sure I will upgrade eventually if I continue recording my own stuff. But, for now, I just need something descent to get me buy-- rather than trying to mix through headphones, or stereo speakers.

. . .and will I be better off with powered monitors, or unpowered, and if unpowered, whats a cheap amp that I can buy?
