China Cymbals

Hey there.

What kind of China cymbal(size, make, etc) would you guys recommend for rock music? Our drummer is lookin for a China cymbal sound similar to that of Godsmack, Disturbed, etc. Im not sure what to tell him cause I dont know shit about cymbals.

For all around, I would go with a 17" Zildjian K. Very even tone with a lot of cutting power.

For more impact but a flatter tone, a Z series would do the trick.

If you can find a Wutan, they have a great tone, but they break easy (they are, however, cheap).

Go with the K.
 
What a coincidence. . . I just got that very cymbal (17" Zildjian K) last week. I admit I don't know jack about drums/cymbals ... but I know what I like to hear. This one sounds nice. Cuts through really well. My only reference of comparison is an old Rancan china ... I thought the K had a lot more decay than the Rancan. But that could also be because the Rancan hadn't been cleaned in about 10 years.

Ha. We went over to guitar center before I posted this topic to check out some cymbals. All we could scrounge up between use was $35, conventiently, they had a sale going. China cymbal $35. Needless to say, we bought the damn thing, it sounds absolutley terrible, like you're banging away on a garbage can. It goes with the rest of the stuff real nicely.
 
Godsmack's drummer uses Sabian but I'm not sure which china he has on his set. It's either a 16" or 18" AAX or AA. (my guess would be the AAX probably 18") I used to have a Rantan...the thing is great for Alice In Chains type stuff.
 
Well, I personally use a 20" Paiste 2002 China-I've used it for at least 10 years.
My problem with The Zildjians was always finding one that sounded similar when I broke one. I was basically eating Zildjians for about 10 years. I switched to Paiste, 10 years ago, and haven't broken a Cymbal since!

The best overall China type, is probably an 18" Wuhan, and it's usually around $100 bucks or so new.

You were breaking Zils, and went to Paiste? Thats weird...everybody I know has problems with Paiste's breaking. I personally have a 20" Dark HH from Sabian. Great cymbal!! go to www.sabian.com and go to their sound vault. you can check out everything they make...very cool....

Iknow-that's strange isn't it?!

I went to Paiste because with Zildjians, I was having a problem finding replacements that sounded like the ones I broke; not because of Durability, it just seemed to work out that way. I use 2002's and the now discontinued Sound Formula series.

Of course, I also switched from a 2S to a Buddy Rich after playing Paste's for about 3 years-which I'm SURE helped in their longevity! hahaha

Topic on china cymbals

Hi Guys, I have just got a new china cymbal. It's a Sabian AAX "18". Firstly one thing i have to tell you. It's loud, It will power through anything and the tone is amazing. If your lookin for a china cymbal. I think this is the one you should have. Quite expensive but worth it. The K customs cannot stand up to it. I use paiste 2002 cymbals. I have the sound edge 14 hi hats which are very nice. 2002 are a great range of cymbals. Thanks Dave. Band= {Pays To THink 182} {Buddys revival} {The LIkeness} {Black Pearl} Yes i play alot lol :)

I play three Wuhans 12" 16" 18" dont hit them very hard though....
Well, I dont slam on them :)
Although the the 18" is pretty thick :D
 
Can't argue with a 12" Wuhan China. Paiste always made a solid line of cymbals but this is coming from a John Bonham fan so...
 
my drummer just bought one. I hate it. It literaly hurts my ears its so bad. When we took a break I took it and hid it for the sake of everybodys ears. The bass player aggreed with me. The drums would be going fine and would sound good and then he would hit the china and my ears would ring and hurt badly. Maybe his is defected, but the one he has is horrible!
 
I've got a Sabian AA Fast China, it's 17", or 18". It's got a nice fast decay so that it explodes and then cools down quick. It also sounds cool for like quarter note ride paterns, or off beat rides.
 
I use an AA Metal-X 18" China. The thing has alot of power. I like it alot.

It works really nicely for my hardcore band.

Tell him to stop bashing the cymbals so hard. Drummers always want to do it and it doesn't sound good. A solid hit with authority is all you need on the cymbals... save the bashing for the snare and toms!

Admittedly, chinas can be stupidly loud.

Speaking of stupidly loud, I recorded a band this weekend with a six thousand dollar Orange County drum kit. OMG the snare on that thing was loud. It was *great*. The 24" kick drum was no joke either.

Did not take long to get a great drum sound once everything was tuned up.
