so i was a member of AcidPlanet a long time ago when i used to use Acid (versions 2.0 and 3.0, yikes). anyway they have these remix contests, and i used to do them pretty regularly, then i sorta disappeared for a couple years. now i decided to go back, armed with better stuff and more knowledge, and see if i can get back into the competition!

the current remix competition is for this band called hellogoodbye, whom i'm not all that familiar with. seems like the type of shit you would hear on a teenage girl's iPod. usually they will give you a whole set of tracks to work with, but for this contest, they just gave us a single vocoded vocal track to work with. i decided to make it into something a little more manly i guess.

i started out pretty ambitious with the project, then got lazy. the guitars probably need to all be re-tracked due to harshness and really, really bad leads and bends, but i said "fuck it!". after the mixdown, i crushed it with some limiters and junk to give it that dynamics-free pop sound that kids love, maybe that'll score me some points with the judges since it sounds so shitty, but at least it's kinda loud. coulda been louder but i backed off a couple notches on the final limiter...the wave still looks like a giant brick though, haha! :D

anyway without further rambling, here's the link to my entry page thing:

the streaming version is pretty low quality, and unfortunately you have to be registered to DL the high quality MP3, but i don't wanna upload it somewhere else or i might get sued or something.

so...what do you guys think?

oh and pay no attention to my older shit, it really sucks...the only reason i havent deleted all of it is to remind myself how bad i used to suck so i can feel better about my newer shit, haha... :D

sounds like that modern pop radio thing. sounds like you did your job. i don't hear anything wrong mix wise. did you have to use the cher effect though? :p

of course i'm listening to the stuff that i not supposed to.

hey man it wasn't me who used the effect, it was those cher-lovers in the original band! the vocal track was already vocoded and brickwalled by the time they put it up for download for the contest. :p

thanks for listening

I think it sounds good. Maybe the drums are a little overdone in some spots. I'm mostly talking about the repetitive kick in the begining but I'm sure that's just my taste. I like the guitar sound. It is mixed very well.

Props

Will

Let me get this straight: the only track you had was the vocal?

That's pretty damn good if that's the case.

Vocoding sucks ass...

What the hell is vocoding?

So you had to make a song just out of a vocal track?

If so, thats pretty good. not my style of music, but it sounds about "right". Good job. :)

Music is great Zed...vocals don't do much for me though... :o

Nice song though. You put it together pretty well.

vocoding is fun!

the only way i've done it is with a plugin, automating each voice to their pitches.

slow process, but i don't have a keyboard to program parts.

vocoder is something that takes a signal, creates a synthesized version of it, and plays back whatever notes the user wants. so its like a talking keyboard.

Does indeed have that "Disney Channel Original Movie" think going on vocally, doesn't it. Good job injecting some testosterone. You got that guy right through puberty, there, didn't you... :) Amazing job backing into a song from just a vocal part, and I really do love the compressed, smooth, L.A. sounding distortion rhythm guitar.

yeah it was just a vocal which already had the vocoder thing done to it. you shoulda seen the appearance of the wave file for the vocal, completely brickwalled to 0 like a master or something. all i did to the vocal was a bit of EQ and a delay. and maybe a touch of reverb i think. thanks for the compliment :D

the first version i did sounded pretty awful. i ended up doing a HUGE mid scoop on the rhythm guitars and it sounded less painful. i probably shoulda just re-tracked but i just used plugins haha.

thanks everyone for listening. i plan on posting some more songs really soon but without the girly-man vocals haha. ;) :D remember, thats not MY vocals there, it's from the contest! :p

i don't know if you guys have heard the original...you can go to the Quick Links thing on the right side of this page and click "Hear the Original Track"
