I made part of a song a while ago, and I recorded a "scetch" version of the guitar and bassline. Listen to it here:

I'm not posting this to write about my songwriting or playing skills, I would just like to know what you think of my bassguitar sound. I've added a poll to let you guess the value (newprice) of my bassguitar (direct injected) according to it's sound.

It's a little meaty and unrefined for the style, but other than that I think it sounds great. Nice playing btw. My guess would be that it is a lower end bass (under 400). It doesn't sound like a fender, and it definitely has a jazz pickup on the bridge, so I'd venture to say it's a yamaha or ibanez. However, I think I may be hearing active electronics (but it's hard to tell if that's just the DI or not) which would make it a bit more expensive bass. I'm probably way off... this is fun.

For the record, you can get a decent sounding bass for pretty cheap. It's the playability that really suffers on some of the low end models. Yamaha and Ibanez do make some very nice basses for the money.

If your poll was about how much Jaco you'd listened to I'd vote "A Lot". It's a bit farty (which may be what you want) but there doesn't seem to be much sustain. Tough listen with that shrill guitar going on. The cost of a guitar seems to me about the most meaningless number in the world unless you're buying or selling. Otherwise it's what you do with it.

Sounds like my old Ibanez on the bridge pickup. It's a farty tone for sure. Not bad... just not what I would have used in this situation.

I've gotten lovely sounds out of cheap basses. Since I sold the Ibanez my only bass at the moment is a Squier Bronco that I routed out (very poorly) to put a humbucker from a Les Paul in. That sees a lot of use. It's a got a big sound and cheap as hell.

Thanks for the replies. I just also trying to see if you would say the same thing, and you did. I think good sound doesn't have much to do with the price of an instrument either. I do listen to Jaco, but not that much. However, I do like his tone. My bass is a 200 dollar Peavey C4, with soapbars. The sound is achieved by playing near the bridge, on the bridge pickup only, with a lowpass filter and a little taken away around 100 hz. I love this tone, although it is indeed farty and honky, that's what I was aiming for.

The guitars do indeed sound shrill. I am in need of some new monitors (EQ and compression and exiter is too much, I know), because the guitar really does sound full and warm, and my mics can handle it too I think. But my speakers have a hard time.

OK...I'll bite...I'm thinkin one of the entry to mid-level Ibanez basses...GSR series maybe.

So,...tell us...what is it. I really have to agree with one of the earlier posters though, that guitar was rather bright which sat way out front in the mix...made it a little difficult to hear the bass. Tame that guitar down a bit could make for a nice rich sound otherwise.

regards.
