Damn, you the man here in this city ..Huh Spinster
Nope.
That's why I am going the overseas route.
As a DJ/Producer, you either make your money here in the 'States', or you make your money overseas. I making good money here in Chicago, but i know I can make a sh*tload more overseas.
I don't want to be on the radio. They don't pay enough. It doesn't matter if you're on 107.5 or 92.3. It doesn't matter if you're Pharris Thomas, Steve Maestro, Boolu, Phantom, or Maurice Joshua. You will only make $150.00 per hour.
Plus, the Program Directors and Music Directors won't give me enough flexibility to spin creatively.
Example..........
Elroy Smith, Program director for WGCI 107.5 FM, told me that he doesn't want me to push the envelope on my musical content. I told him that Pharris and Boolu (92.3) are kicking you *sses all over the radio dial.
I then continued to share with him that if he wants to keep his listeners, the he needs a DJ like myself at his station.
Even at one of the conference meetings we had down at the downtown offices on Michigan Ave. Steve 'Miggedy' Maestro was saying that "Well, Spin, some of the music you are playing is too new, .... the scratches you are adding are too complex, .... you are playing different accapellas over different instrumentals, ....you are playing R&B-Hip-Hop-80's-70's-WBMX House-new house, and Underground genre's". I said, what the f*ck do you yhink they are playing over on 92.3? You guys have the EXACT same viewer demographics!
So, for me it's not worth the headache of being on the radio here in Chi' (for $150.00 per hour). I tried to tell DJ Lil'John and DJ Vaughn woods @ 107.5, that Elroy Smith will give them a BIG *SS HEADACHE, when it comes to the music that they can and can't play. Until, WGCI changes Program Directors or
Elroy Smith changes his views on music content, I will not be spinning for GCI and they will keep losing to 92.3.
And most of the venues or promoters, here in Chicago, aren't paying enough money for me to play their events.
Why should I spin for $150.00 to $750.00 per night, when I can get $500.00 per every 15 minutes, when playing abroad.
There are a few DJ's here in Chicago making more money than me.
Jesse De La Pena
Mark Grant
33/3
Derrick Carter
Felix Da House Cat
Paul Johnson
Sneak
But, 5 of those 7 are straight-up HOUSE DJ's and they make most of their money overseas.
Jesse and 33 spin all formats and they are making LOOT (I can't front on that).
So, for the moment I can work with the low 4 figures a week I make here in Chicago. My goal is to pull in about $40,000 per month. and I am on the correct road to acheive that amount.
I post more later..........................
