I really wonder if one could get a great vocal track with a singer who has a voice that's worth nothing.

I mean I know about double-tracking, autotune and so on... but after the treatment it would still sound like a bunch of crappy voices in tune.

IS there a way to make even the crappiest voice sound acceptable (without adding any other voices)?

I'm happy that I got my voice to a point where autotune would do the trick - though I don't use it because I think slightly out of tune is not that fatal if the sound is there.

but anyway: imagine that record-label-dude coming to you, a gorgeous looking babe by his side. she can't sing, but they want to make a popstar out of her. what would you do to get a good vocal job (i'm not talking about an oral job here... hehehe) without hiring additional singers?

Like the Bear says...One way of getting a vocal out of a marginal vocalist is to have someone do a "Ghost" or "Guide" vocal...This where you have someone who CAN sing do the track and then your hacker sings with it...:D

Well . . . you could painstakingly go over each section . . . cutting take after take after take untill you get something that sounds reasonably good. You could literally take it verse by verse, punching in single words or phrases if you had to. Then, at the end of the day, you'd sort through all of the different takes and pick out the best ones and comp together one vocal track out of it all.

You could even do it over several days, if you had the time.

With unlimited time and money, you could even hire a vocal coach to warm up with her before she starts tracking, as well as to critique and encourage her during the tracking process.

You might be able to fool some people with doctoring up a bad vocalist but not many.
 
thats been made into a movie actually something with kari wuhr in it.....dont remember the name...remember thinking it was funny. some people just need to be told no...like ashanti for instance....and lumidee...i wonder how many takes they took to get it right and what about the band thursday he could still use some help....if your going for indie rock they dont even have to be on key and for some reason people like it....if shes trying to be pop...make sure she stocks up on condoms and ky....shes gonna need it to get to the top

but sometimes you see/hear those "stars" "performing" and you just _know_ - maybe because the ghost of elvis appears and tells you so - they can't sing but their cd's sound acceptable, so I wonder how you would do this.

that's exactly what I believe, bear.

the problem is that shiny shit shines so much that sloppy listeners (like 99% of all listeners are) won't get that it's just shit.
 
If the singer is consistently off key to a degree you can correct that with a pitch transposer, which is available on many multi-effects units and dedicated voice processors.

I'm not a big fan of the practice, but since you asked...

I'm with him.

I have this singer who is fine, I mean she'd give me a bj with my wife in the next room. Can she sing? She's ok, Can autotune fix her? A little. She is on her own. No producer. A GOOD producer would NOT be wasting his time with someone who cant sing regardless of looks. He wants THE WHOLE PACKAGE, looks and voice.

And trust me, my wife cant stand this girl because she flirts with me right in front of her !

I'm flattered, but my wife is like, screw it, shes paying $25/hr, money is money, just dont F@@k her or I'm out. And trust me, my wife is the owner of my studio. Everything is in her name because she gets the grant money because she is a "white woman minority" which funds our studio equipment and supplies.
