I currently have a set-up which I'm very happy with - I'm running through the TonePort UX1, which is essentially playing the role of a pre-amp, and for my needs, up until now, it done everything required.
I just got hold of two condenser mics, both SE2200As, based on recommendations from friends. But they require phantom power, and the UX1 can't supply phantom power. It also has only one mic input (but several other inputs).
What is my best option to be able to use the condeser mics?
A few options have crossed my mind:
- Get a cheap pre-amp to supply the phantom power. Run the two mics out of the pre-amp through L/R outs, and into the UX1 as seperate inputs.
Questions for this option: What pre-amps would be good for this job? Would the sound quality suffer a lot?
- Sell the UX1, buy the UX2 which has multiple mic slots and phantom power. But I'm not sure how much my UX1 would be worth now, this option would be costly.
- Sell the UX1, get a new pre-amp altogether. But this would be the most expensive, and I use a lot of the UX1s features.
I guess the most likely is the first option. In which case, what should I get? I was thinking something like this Behringer:

NOTE: My technical understanding is fairly rudimentary, so if I'm missing something obvious, don't be afraid to explain
