Wut would be the cheapest must effective way to record drums. How many and wat type of mics would i need

What type of sound quality are you looking for? Is this just for your own entertainment, or a demo to try to get gigs or a self published CD? Hell you could put one $20 radio shack mic in the room and hope for the best if you just want to get sound onto "tape". But for a decent home studio sound I would suggest a pair of small diaphragm condensor mics for overheads. A sm57 on the snare and a mic with good low end response in the kick. Check the microphone forum for discussions of mics and prices but a basic set up could look like this:

pair MXL 603s $199
Shure sm57 $ 79
Shure Beta 52 $180
-----
$458 oh and don't forget cables and mic stands, about another $80 and make sure the drummer changes his heads, he should pay for that so you don't have to (unless you're providing the kit, then it's up to you to have fresh heads and properly tune them)

If you want to talk cheap,

One good large diaphram condenser placed in front of the drums would do.

However, for a little more options, two condensers overhead, a bass drum and snare mic will do.

True... but only if the drums themselves and the room they're in already sound good....!

Amen brother!

Kick - AT atmpro25 $70

Snare - Shure sm57 $80

Overheads - $200 or less and depending on the sound you want, a pair of :
Marshall MXL603's
Marshall MXLv67's
Studio Projects B1's
Octava 012's

$350 TOTAL

if your on a budget try a behringer xm2000 on snare.... i chose it over a sm57 for my currnet project, i find the sound a little more "open".. a bit more hat bleed than a 57, but a nice "snare" sound.

however, unlike the sm57, this mic is not much good for anything else.

dirt cheap drum mic set up:

bass drum- at 25pro
snare- beh xm 2000
overhead- beh ecm8000 x2

i don't think you would get anything terribly usable for much less than that. nb that the ecm8000s being omni need a good room, and a little time to set up.. also they need a phantom power source....

something like the mxl603 or the sp b1 (as gidge suggested) are cardoid, and like the 57 may be more useful in and around the studio than the suggested counterparts.

you can't really go wrong with gidges' suggestions, the mics on that list are much better all round. my list would be regarded as absolute bottom feeder, but i think they work ok.
