Anyone know a nice little secret store on the Web to order cheap disks for the MD8? The lowest I can find is about US$12.

Thanks,
MP

Yo Mr. Perfekt:

Keep your recordings in the PERFECT zone and use the Sony data disc EXCLUSIVELY.

I got ripped by Musician's Friend once. They offered the Sony disc at a very good price and mailed me TKD discs. I sent them back and they sent them back to me. Needless to say, I don't buy NADA from MF anymore.

Once in a while you can find a sale on the Sony MD data disc but not often. Shop around on the 800 numbers. Tell them you'll buy ten discs for a discounted price. Ten discs would last you until 3000 AD.

Cheers,
Green Hornet

Greetings again, Mr. Hornet

And thanks!

The only MD8 discs I've ever found were Sony and HHB. Do you like Sony discs for their construction and/or reliability? I like HHB, but mostly for their cool slip on/off covers (another victim of style over substance? :)

I think I've bought 5-packs before, but I go through them like nothing (with only about 17mins per disk, and I sometimes do several takes per disk). But lately I've been going through old disks, getting tough, and erasing those old tracks that never get anywhere. It's sorta liberating...

I'm getting sick of going to Guitar Centre to hear, "we don't have any but we should get some more in soon." A cool local shop has them for $12 each, but they don't make deals with volume.
:(
wah wah wahhhhh....

Yo Perfekt One:

I like the Sony discs and, so far, the TKD's have worked. But now that I have the Yamaha DAW 2816 in the studio, I have spent more time with that box -- it makes great sounds but takes some time to learn the ins/outs.

I just noticed that you live in my old home town, Chicago. Sure do miss the restaurants in that town. Grand Rapids Michigan has one style of restaurant - sterile -- very little decor or ambiance.

I used to work at the Como Inn on Milwaukee Ave. Grew up with the owner's son. Heard a few months ago the joint went under. Too bad. That was a great place to really enjoy dinner, like a 4 or 5 hour excursion.

I also use some two track discs on the MD8 for odds/ends or when I use CD background music on one track and do vocals on the other one.

Enjoy,
Green Hornet

You know, it never even occured to me to use regular MDs in the MD8, for just guitar/voice "sketches" or whatever. Great big DUH on my part!
Thanks!

The Como Inn sounds familiar, but I don't think I ever went there, probably went by it. I think that says a lot about a place, when you work there and still enjoy the restaurant. Here, like a lot of towns, we're being overrun by Starbucky cafes, etc. My friends and I try to seek out the cool, independent restaurants when we go out.

I've been coveting the 2816 myself, glad to hear you picked one up. Like many of the women who shop Michigan Ave. here, she's a bit out of my price range.

But ONE DAY.

My really only con about the MD8 is the inability to store in memory and then save onto a different MD. Glad to see the 2816's CD drive not only burns music but song data. Cool!

How's the mastering of the workstation going?

I been mail ordering them from either MF or FullCompass.com for about $14 each, no bulk discounts within my budget. I must be doing something wrong? I have only about 8 disks total and I can get 3 or 4 songs per disk... Oh thats right....My music sucks...thats what Im doing wrong! Doh...
TDK's and Sony's have same performance to me. Oh well...
Peace,
Dennis

Ya know, I found a place online awhile back that was pretty cheap, but I would have had to buy at least 10 MDs and then the shipping costs removed any discount I was getting anyway...

A little local audio store near me sells SONYs for about $12 each, but they usually only have 2 or 3 available at any given time. I'm guessing even they don't get much pricebreak...

Yo Perfekt One:

What sort of scares one when the DAW 2816 arrives is the huge manual that pops out of the box. If I didn't have previous experience with 4 and 8 trackers, I probably would have started drinking martinis and evaporated from alcohol.

However, with some study, the 2816 is really a miniature PC and CD burner all in one box. There is a huge midi section plunked right in the middle of the manual that has no bearing for me as I don't do midi.

The organization of instruction in the manual is a huge VACUUM. I taught English Composition at the college level for lots of years and most manuals would get a double FF as a grade from me.

I'm getting to understand the whole box now. I'm awaiting the UPS power back-up and probably won't turn on the box until it arrives. I guess the box would survive a power outage as the manual has a section in it that discusses "accidently shutting off the power...?????

So, all in all, I'm happy with the purchase. As I said before, great sound and great mixing controls all built in. All the reverb boxes I have hooked up to my MD8 will stay there; don't need them with the 2816. But, there is always the possibility of using them for input on a vocal if I want to.

How about the Italian Village downtown Chicago? I used to run around with one of the sons of the owner way back.

Thanks for the disc info site.

Big thick manual, hmm? A friend of mine just bought the Korg Karma synth and his brother and I cracked up when we saw the encyclopedia set that comes with it! :)
You know you've stumbled upon a new continent when the manual even has a manual...(!)

Haven't even powered it up yet? I don't think I would be able to wait!! Then again, better safe than sorry. I wonder if it's possible to trade in the MD8 for a bit of a discount on the Yamaha... Where did you get your new box from? Online?

I work a few blocks from the Italian Village. I love that place but I can't go there too often; I would weigh a ton!

I also love the Berghoff (nearby) and a little old French restaurant up north on Clark called Le Creperie (pardon my poor French spelling). Good crepes!

Is that little screen on the Yamaha a touch screen? It looks cool. I love how the box seems to be stand alone but can also be used with a PC setup. Very sweet...enjoy!

Yo Perfekt One:

Small world about the Italian Village. Know just where you work even though I've been out of Chi-town many years.

I did POWER up the unit. [It does NOT have a touch screen.] I have music on the Hard Drive to do a session with a singer friend of mine. And, the music was piped in from my CD player and sounds absolutely great.

I bought my unit from Full Compass. They usually beat most advertised prices by 100 to 250 dollars. I've had very good luck with them. They do things like sending an Xmas card and thanking me for the business. That's good business.

Years back, when I was a bartender in Saugatuck, I used to serve the guys who owned Berghoff's. A really small world isn't it.

I will be powering up the unit again as soon as I get my UPS power back up plug in. I don't want the juice to go off and find that my HD is whacked. It probably wouldn't happen but I can wait a few days until I get the reserve power unit.

Whenever you get ready to buy a piece of gear, check around the 800 circuit and then call Full Compass. You'll buy most of the time at Full Compass.

Stay away from the pasta brotha,
Green Hornet

Hey Mister Hornet,

I've checked out the Full Compass site before. They don't carry as much as other stores, but I like that what they DO carry they've used, and stand behind. Better than my going to Guitar OffCentre and hearing, "Uh, yeah, I think that would work. I dunno, I just started working here because my band broke up..."
:)

Where I work (graphic design), the Berghoff and Italian Village are close, but just far enough in the winter that I won't load up there every day. But, of course, they're opening a Giordano's directly across the street from me...I grew up right near the original, underground location. Best stuffed pizza I've ever had.

What is the 800 circuit? Do you mean to call a bunch of stores' 800 numbers? Or is this some not-so-Grand Prix?
:)

Yo Perfekt One:

Yeah, the 800 circuit is calling all the vendors via their "free" phone number and checking prices. Before I bought my 2816 I checked prices with four vendors; Full Compass came in about 200 pezzutos cheaper than the others. As a matter of fact, I just ordered some cables from FC and am awaiting my secondary power source box to arrive from them.

I deal with a nice gal, Heather Paske, if you ever want to ask for her. FC is the only vendor whose reps sent me a Christmas card. That isn't much but it does speak for the organization.

The pizza in Chicago is seond to NONE. We have a couple of decent places around here but certainly Chi-town is the tops. Also, I miss those little dingy beef/sausage sandwich shops which are found on the "corners" of streets like Cicero Avenue, etc. What great sandwiches -- nothing like that here.

Happy St. Patrick's Day

Yeah, I used to work at one of those fast food places in high school ("Hey Buds" on 56th and Pulaski). the italian beef and italian sausage combo with red sauce is great!

Man, to me a really good stuffed pizza is a formal dinner, and not a quick fast food night. Oooooh, I think I know what I'm having for dinner tonight...
:)

I'm catching a swell gal named Shannon McNally at a small club near my house tonight. Should be a good show...

Here's to hoping your power box comes soon,

Sometimes you can find discs for dirt cheap, especially from people that are upgrading their recording system to something that doen't use MD discs. I bought 34 discs for $20 when a guy traded in his MD8. I recently got rid of my MD8 for a hard disk setup, and so now I'm stuck with 34 discs that I would sell for dirt cheap!!!

Hey Busted Kitty!

Would you seriously sell them for cheap? How much? And is that Canadian or $US?

What did you upgrade from your MD8 to?

Thanks, and welcome!
MP

Make me an offer. I have no need of them.

As for the upgrade, I went with a PC and Aardvark Q10 setup. I use Cakewalk. You can get into a 24bit Aardvark card and rack mount breakout box (with 8 xlr inputs and 1/4" inputs), with Cakewalk Pro Audio 9 included for around $1400 Canadian (that's like...five bucks American, isn't it?)

With this setup I can record over 200 tracks of audio (although I've never gone beyond 34), mix it, export it to Sound Forge, master it, and burn it! The Aardvark also comes with a virtual mixing console.

The MD8 rocks, don't get me wrong, but I just found there were some serious limitations to working with an 8 track MD recorded, especially without some sort of interface to a PC.

Cheers.

Cool! I can somehow see a CakeWalk/ ProTool future looming for me somewhere down the line... I was tracking a song last night that uses several different drum loops, etc, and I could see how better editing (or, in the MD8's case, editing in general) would really benefit the way the song seems to be morphing.

What type of music do you work with? That is, I'm assuming you're not a big-name spoken word producer...
:)

As for the MD DATAs. are they 140MB? If so, what would you say to $30 CAD for the lot? How many do you have? Are you registered with any online payment service? I could pay as early as Wednesday.

Thanks much,
MP

Yes, we can certainly arrange for some kind of deal. I have at least 30 disks. We need to see how we can make things work (I'm up here in northern BC as you might know). They are all 140Mb disks. You'd have to erase them though, which is easily done on the MD8.

As for Cakewalk, it sounds like it's your thing. It does a great job of loops, and allows you to do some pretty spectacular editing. It's extremely easy to use. A couple of days on the program and you'll be a pro. I especially like the built in effects (I rarely use my outboard effects processor anymore) and the automated mixing console (not the Aardvark, but the Cakewalk mixer). If you have ever edited music in wave form, this is for you. Plus, you can burn to MP3 or .WAV right from the program!

I found that one of the worst things about the MD8 was that you couldn't accurately clean up your tracks (unless the time between playing was long enough to record silence over the track). With Cakewalk you simply zoom in and cut it out! No messing around. I record mostly radio friendly rock stuff, but I'll eat up 8 tracks just getting the drums recorded properly. A good mix for my material usually requires about 24 tracks (sometimes more) so that I can get some really fat sounding rhythm tracks. I also like to record guitars using several mics at once, and this can eat up 3 tracks just for the one guitar part. I think you'll definitely enjoy the freedom of having 256 tracks available to you. (Also, buying the MD8 new cost me more than my Aardvark card, interface, and Cakewalk software!!! (Yikes!!!)

I have Pro Tools 5.1 as well as Samplitude 6. I like Cakewalk the best, but this might be because I'm more familiar with it. I know alot of guys that love to use Pro Tools.

You can reach me by email at stevieb@netlinkmail.com

Cheers

Hey Green Hornet....Saugetuck...yeah....played there at the Gables (Old Crow) in '67..........great place, great town.
I went for the MF deal on Sony MD Data's and got TDK's also, tried 'em out, no problems so far. Love my MD8 and will be posting some .mp3's soon.
