Hi, newbie here. As the title says, can anyone recommend a cheap standalone recorder for recording live drum tracks? The cheaper the better! 2 or more xlr inputs with phantom power is desirable as is a fairly modern method ( sd card / usb) for exporting the tracks into my desktop DAW (reason 6). This is only for the purpose of recording drum demos so quality isnt that important. Ill be using 2 or 3 condenser mics to do the job. Any help or advice much appreciated. :)

If you want more than 2 mic inputs and you want cheap the only solution I can think of is a 4 mic input USB mixer. Yes, I get that you want to avoid a computer but in practice any old laptop will do.

A 4 input mixer would allow a decently "panned" picture of the kit to record to a stereo channel. Drums is loud so the usual USB mixer noise should not be a problem.

Dave.

This Zoom (or equivalent Tascam) works great. The built in stereo mic setup is surprisingly good. If you want to you can add two more mics via XLR. Has phantom.. I've used this setup with the onboard stereo and a kick through XLR and it worked well.

Plenty food for thought... Thanks for taking the time to respond folks, its much appreciated. :)

If you don't mind used and you're in the US, every once in a while Zooms or Tascams will show up on the link below. The big brown truck delivered today a used H4n I bought there for $149.95. From the looks I almost believe it may have been a demo, as all paperwork and included batteries were still sealed in the package and the unit doesn't really show any sign of use.

B&H is awesome and open boxes are the bomb. I know it's impossible to believe (haha) but many times people buy something, use it for what they temporarily need it for and then return it. Other times people buy stuff, don't have the patience to work through any issues encountered and return it. Almost everything I own was an open box, a scratch and dent or a craigslist score. Most of it financed by selling stuff I no longer need on Craigslist lol.
