I know there have been a lot of threads by people asking if there is a cheaper alternative to SM57. Of course, their balls get busted, because a 57 is $80 new and $50 used. People ask, "How cheap do you want it to be?!!" Well, I saw these on ebay, and it's a mic I am intimately familiar with:

The mic is AKG D690, predecessor to the D770. I did a google search on it, and all I found was Pearl Jam (who used it extensively for both live and recording applications), and *me*, because of gear lists on guitar9 and posts I've made on Homerec.com. These really are good mics, especially on snare, cabs, and live vocals. They are discontinued now, but this guy has 4 of them up on ebay with no bids, currently showing $1. If you are really broke, or really cheap, or just looking for some variation in your dynamic options, snagging one of these cheap would be a very good move. I used it for a stage mic for over 5 years, and would not trade mine for an SM58 in the box.-Richie
