i have sonar 2xl....and i want to if i should use its rack equipment...or should i get some behringer gear...ive heard its bad but its all i can afford....

Look at using software FX. A lot of good ones are free, and you can change your mind about how you want the FX to sound after you record.

The behri comps are actually okay and I would recommend getting one of these, even if you do later decide to use plugins. Outboard comps are always handy for taming peaks before they hit and clip in you're A/D's.
As for "FX" like reverb, chorus, flange, etc the Behri stuff (virtualizer)absolutely blows (except as a white noise generator).

I agree with the plugin approach as probably being best for you. Avoid the Behringer stuff. There is some affordable hardware that is not *that* much more than Behringer. Like for compression go with the FMR RNC, for example.

Sonar 2XL has the Sonic Timeworks EQ and CompressorX, which are a pretty good pair of plugins, I would pick them over cheap outboard anyday.
Purchased seperately direct from Sonic Timeworks those two plugs would cost about $430 bucks, they really made Sonar 2XL a great deal IMO.
If you want to really upgrade the quality of the reverb and modulation plugs from the stock Sonar 2 ones, you could take a look at the DXPro bundle from Anwidasoft, I bought it and definetely think that it's a great deal for 200 bucks, way better and much more flexable that any new hardware multi-effect unit that's at that price point.

Anwidasoft has a freebie DX Reverb Light plugin available that's based on one of the DXPro Reverb's algorithms, so you can get an idea of the sound quality before making a purchase.
