cheap newbie box?

I'm looking for some kind of hardware sampler/sequencer/groovebox/synth, whatever, to play with. I have tons of experience with software sequencers/trackers but I've always wanted to try the seemingly more limited scope of hardware. I enjoy and make a lot of industrial type stuff, but would like to dabble in as many tekno related fields as possible. At this point I'm looking towards a cheap "groovebox" type unit but from what I've read they seem to have tons of ups AND downs... just looking for suggestions from people who have used them and/or own them.
 
The electribes are about the only ones that are what you might consider cheap, cost wise. They are pretty cool mainly beacause they are so cheap. Then on the other end of the spectrum, the roland's are not cheap (new). Although, on ebay they're alot cheaper... My only experience was with the mc-505. I got it new for $1150 and sold it recently for $475, if that tells you anything. I've always liked the electribes because even if you don't like it, at least you did'nt lose that much money to find out. I'm sure you could get just about any of em on ebay for not much more than a bill or so.

thanks! wow, the electribes are definitely interesting - i'm not sure how i missed them before. i'm considering getting a used em-1 (the groovebox like one) used and, if I like it, getting a es-1 (the beat sampler one) and synching them together to expand my sounds... then, after looking around awhile, i found that i could buy the very same sampler a lot of my oldschool heros used, a akai s3000xl, on ebay for just a little more.... of course, there's a lot more involved with using one of those than with korg's little number, but damn!
 
The Yamaha AN200 and DX200 boxes are way better than the Korg Electribes and for only a little more cash.

I shopped around for quite a while before deciding on the AN200. It was a toss up between the Korg and the Yamaha for a while. After several auditions of both units I ended up with the Yamaha for it's versitility over the Korg. I found that coming up with unique sounds on the Electribe was more difficult than on the Yammy.

I've pretty much decided on the Korg EM-1 for various reasons, but if anyone else stops by this thread I did check out those two Yamaha and they seem to be outstanding boxes... and as for more expensive? Nah, you can buy BOTH of them for under 500 dollars used on E-bay. I'll probably pick them up in the future if I enjoy my EM-1.
 
like krakit, i'd also choose the yammies over the korgs... they're more like little toy boxes... the fischer price of synthesis :D ... ach... oh well... they'll probably make do fine and by the time you've outgrown them, you'll have new funds for other gear, and you'll definitely have learned the important basics..
 
I had a electribe thingy, and though it was fun, it wasn't really hittin' on shit. The Yamaha toys are much niftier I think, too. BTW - I returned my electribe for something else...
