MXL 990 Cardioid Condenser Mic with Shockmount
Product #273156 @ $69.00

Shure SM57. It will cost you $10 more but will last a lifetime.

And that is cool for recording woodwinds and vocals?

Thanks.

I think the 1st mic anyone should buy is the SM57.

An SM57 will record about anything. Better yet, it'll last forever, and if you decide to get rid of it, you'll get most of your money back by putting it on eBay.

Yeah, vocals, woodwinds, just about everything. Someone smarter than me said on this board or another, that the 57 on any given job will never suck.

I was wondering how you would hook this mic up to your pc. Does it run on batteries and if so does it have some cable that you could plug into your sound card?

Thanks

The SM57 doesn't run on batteries. You'd use a standard mic cable, usually with XLR connections at either end, or maybe with a 3.5 " jack at the soundcard end. Whether or not it will plug into the soundcard would depend on what connections the soundcard has. Usually the mics plugged into a mixer, breakout box or mic pre.
