I was in tue local Ausch-mart today looking through all the cheap stuff they put right as you walk in the door when I saw what could be a perfect mic/accessory case. It's meant for sports accessories, handguns etc. It's like 1 ft sq. and about 6in deep and filled with two layers of egg crate foam and a bottom layer of small squares so that you can make custom fitting places for whatever. $10! I would have taken pics but I was told by my mother in law to leave it on the shelf and see if it would show up under the tree. So if anyone's looking for a cheap way to store mics and keep them safe check Wally world!

I thought the same thing of the pistol cases I saw at local sports stores. 8-10 bucks. But then I just keep mics in their original boxes which do the same thing.

i have a couple of them that i picked up from work. nice little boxes.

All the useful things in life can be found at a gun show. And I'm not talking about guns. Surgical clamps, little pliers with a long skinny part before the plier. Metal files, and other things. Pretty much everything you need to mod a mic. Or DIY a shock mount. Including said cases.

I'd be hesitant of the egg crate foam, or any foam, unless you line it with felt or other dense / thick material to keep any powdered decay of said foam off of / out of the mic.

I wouldn't have thought of that, thanks Shadow_7! I'll have to scrounge up some felt to cover everything in...

Surplus tool stores like Harbor Freight are also a good source.

Watch those sporting goods stores, they have insane sales on
gun cases at times that can be used for LOTS of things.

Home depot has brief cases for 19.99 metal construction and comes in various colors.
They aren't always visible though you really have to search for them, some times in the tool box area or some times in the electrical department.
I have several and you can easily fit about 30 SM 57s in it in their zipper pouches.

I tend towards the briefcase route. It helps put my laptop at just the right height on the computer desk. And also keeps any spilled beer from interacting with the electronics (pesky cat...). And keeps any vents on the bottom of the device from being smothered by other options like a pillow or blanket. While having a little basket under it to keep extra cables and other trinkets.

Yeah I know the first time I had seen them I purchased three of them. And here in New Hampshire .... No sales tax!!!

Guys also keep in mind, this foam is not the anti static type. Yeah, it might seem anal but I know people who's condenser's have been ruined from keeping them in handgun cases due to the static electricity building up on the foam. They do make anti-static foam (for computer stuff) but its pricey. My personal policy is I will use one of those cases to travel with the mics, but don't keep them in there for long-term storage.

Samsonite

Hi,

I buy vintage Samsonite luggage for a buck or two at yard sales and thrift shops. Light, stout, a variety of sizes. Of course they don't usually come with foam.

I also buy little zipper bags for a quarter or fifty cents for the mics I buy that don't come with bags.

Yes, I'm cheap, but that means more money for mics.

Thanks,

Hairy Larry
