After taking some suggestions from the forum, I redid parts of this song. This is the final version:

I'm not going to change anything because it was a cover just for fun and all, and I'm so burnt out on it. I did it to learn as much as possible before recording some originals soon. So if there's anything wrong with the final lay it on me, and I can incorporate that knowledge into my next mix.

4-tracker, I'm not going to say this just because you've liked my song on my thread, but this song you've mixed is amazing! I really liked how intimate the vocals sounds! It reminded my of a kind of The Breeders, you know?

Really nice mix. I love raw vibes mixes, btw.

Thanks, buddy. If you ever want to collaborate let me know -- I think we have similar interests.

Vocalist sounds close to the microphone. Picking up a lot of proximity effect and it sounds like it was sung pretty quietly and with too much reserve.

Musically, I am digging the sounds and how everything is coming together. In particular, I'm digging the opening guitar tone. The vocals however, are sitting on top of the mix due to having too much body. The close singing is not something that can't be dealt with in the mix though. Just takes the right EQ cuts perhaps some gentle compression with a fast attack and medium release to dull the front end a bit and push them back in the mix. Guitar goes out of tune here and there as well. Sounds more like playing technique than anything else - either pushing the strings down to hard or compensating for finger positions that didn't quite get there.

Vocal technique and doing takes until the pitch is good and the delivery is natural and relaxed is probably the thing that I would focus on most for the next recording if this was a project I was involved in.

Nice job.

Thanks for the detailed feedback, Fishy.
The vocal was a ribbon mic, and I suspect that's why it has so much body (she was 6" away. I could move her back, but the ribbon already has low gain). I EQd out all the low end, but maybe I need to take out even more low end, because I do agree it still has a lot of body. I also added light compression (I'll check the attack and release times) and reverb.

Listening reference: Home stereo with full speakers.

The vocals are not coming through very well. You can hear them and then they get over ran with the instruments. Also sounds like she is not singing in a high enough range and she is struggling to hit the notes in that range. If you get another run at the vocals, if you haven't already, see if she can get it in a range that is not as hard for her. Plus it would counter the rest of the musics (just an opinion).

Mix seemed like it didn't have enough room. Felt like everything was on top of each other.

Hope this helps.
