Channel Inserts on 488mkII?

uh...what do the channel inserts do?
And how about the 2tr input and the sub input?
I'm looking at them and going..."huh?"
I've heard something about using channel inserts to put a compressor in-line with the mic, but how?

those are on the front, right???....i think you can stick an effect there ( TRS) i think they are pre fader.....

inserts

Inserts are for mono effects.

It uses a cable that goes from TRS [tip ring sleeve], same as a 1/4" stereo headphone connector, which goes to 2 1/4" mono [TS] cables/connectors.. one goes TO the effect, the other comes back from it.

This way you can patch an EQ, echo, compressor, mono reverb, anything - straight into the mixer line. I believe they are prefader on the 488 and 488MkII, meaning that the signal affected by the channel slider is what's coming back from the insert.

I've used there most often for pathcing compressors and/or better EQ straight into a channel.

A TRS cable is really 2 indpendent connections, each carrying a separate signal. In a balanced configuration, both connections are used to carry the same signal (inverted in polarity) - in an unbalanced situation, each path can be used as a distinct signal carrier...

I don't know what you mean by 2tr, but the sub inputs can be used for running external devices (mixer, pc audio, etc) through the recorder. For instance, if you connect the 488 to your computer via the line outs and have monitors hooked up to the monitor outs, you could run line from your computer into the sub inputs. This would allow you to use the monitors when mixing your tracks and then to play audio from your pc without having to mess around with reconnecting everything.
