Changing track instrument during song

I own a Korg Triton workstation connected via Midisport USB Interface to my PC, with Cakewalk Sonar software sequencer. When I record from the synthesizer to the sequencer, the sequencing information is saved. However, the sequencer doesn't save the actual instrument in each track, so each time I load the sequencing data from my computer, I still have to manually enter each instrument of each track directly on the Triton, so the sequencer is playing the proper sounds. I want to have the power to change the instrument in one track to a different instrument at a certain point during the song. For example, on track 3 the first 8 measures will play a trumpet part, and then at measure 9, same track, it will switch to a violin part. Is this possible? Thanks a lot, and I hope I explained that clearly.

Should be

I am no keyboardist, but I have recorded them before using Cakewalk / Sonar etc.
I remember that If you put a midi program change message (choosing your instrument)included both at the beginning and later where you want to change to violin it should work perfectly.

Yep, you need to add a Program Change message in the Event List. Make sure you have a beat or two of space after and before the patch change so you don't get any glitches.

This will be a bit more automatic if you use the Triton's Instrument Definition in Sonar. Then you can select the correct patches from within the MIDI Track Properties dialog box and that should be that.

Thanks a lot for your replies. I definately will have to set a program change in the track on the sequencer. But one of the problems is that Sonar isn't saving the instrument assignments on the Triton. AlChuck mentioned that I need to set Triton's instrument definition in Sonar. I'm not sure exactly how to do that. Thanks.

If you put a Program Change at the beginning of each track it will automatically setup the right parts every time it plays. The only way to save the assingments on the Triton is to actually save the combi patch on the Triton and call it up when you start that project. Then you only have to send one global program change to call up that combi and all the other parts will be ready with the proper effects, etc.
