I have a late model Tele' that I'm dressing up a bit and plan on replacing the string ferrules found on the back of the guitar. What would be the safest way to remove them without damaging the finish?

Also, any tips on installing new ones? i.e. Glue etc. The instructions at Stewart MacDonald for installation require soldering iron (?) to loosen the finish? Sorry, but it can't be that difficult.

Anyway, what's a safe way to remove and install?

Thanks

On my 2001 MiM the ferrules would just fall out. I replaced them with WD ones. Those are ridged and I tapped them in lightly with a rubber mallett and they have been great.

I have a 2003 MiM that has not had a problem with the ferrules.

A soldering iron is not a bad idea for removal, as the heat will make the metal shrink (the same reason we heat frets before we remove them), but for myself, I simply use a small screwdriver, and put it through the hole. just wiggle it in circles until the ferrule starts to cllimb out of the hole.
