i just sold a bunch of stuff and now looking for somthingi to be more mobile. i really only need two ins but being able to have 4 would be nice. i really just record vocals, guitar, bass, and a little hand percussion (shaker, tambourine, etc;). i just program drum ideas at home then go to a studio and do live drums.

i was thinking about maybe getting some kind of interface that has really good convertors and a couple mic pres. or maybe just getting that uad apollo twin solo. i like the idea of being able to track through stuff. but anyway any thoughts would be great. and thanks in advance!

oh and im using a macbook pro and logic pro 9

'Mobile' - are you looking for an audio interface that is USB-powered (rathere than wall wart)? Lots of choices.

A lot of USB interfaces that offer more than a basic 2 in 2 out and little more also need a PSU. An example is my Focusrite 8i6.
One that doesn't however is the Native Instruments KA6. 2 Mic/line/instrument inputs. Two more balanced line ins, four balanced outs MIDI I/O and S/PDIF all under 200 notes.

It DOES require the maximum power available from USB 2.0 but I only have two ports on the front of one computer that will not power it. Everything else is fine, even my HP i3 laptop.

not necessarily. cause im thinking about maybe getting some kind of focusrite and getting 2 or 3 preamps. so mainly just somthing smaller. cause i could get a uad twinfinity preamp and focusrite psa1 or whatever its called and just put them all in a bag and go.
i just want something that has a good convertors mostly

I really would not worry about converter quality if you are shopping at the Focusrite/KA6/Presonus level. You would probably have to stick a nought on the end of the price tag to get any discernible difference and even then it is doubtful if you, or anybody else would hear it without comparably priced monitors and room treatments.

One pre amp you should investigate IMHO is the Audient Mico. Excellent quality and value with some useful features but best of all, a S/PDIF output from excellent converters. So, if you had the NI KA6 you could S/PDIF the Mico, have the two AI pres and connect a mixer to the two line inputs. Six discrete tracks and most of it would go in a decently sized laptop bag!

audient id22 would be my #1 choice (even over the apollo), in fact I'm going to get one within the next 2-3 weeks so will let you know, the main reason it looks better than the apollo is the quality of AD/DA converters inside and the pre-amps

Nice guitar mate! I don't often listen to punters clips, too many are just a razzy guitar and shouting.(Yes! I AM getting old!)

I like the looks of the iD22, shame they couldn't run to MIDI!

I also fancy the new SPL Crimson and if I were starting afresh I would seriously consider one but would it really have cost THAT much more to put ADAT on it?

damn man, that thing looks incredible. a lot of the reason i was thinking about getting the apollo duo was so i could also record through the uad plugins. but idk now. blah decisions decisions.

hmm the inserts and sends for the audient id22 seems like itd come in handy with guitar pedals and such. the more i read about htis the more im digging it more than the uad apollo duo
