changing sample pitches

Hi, I've got a question about changing the pitches of samples (ie wav files) when using progs such as fruityloops. I've noticed that the way that fruity loops, and the Vienna soundfont thingy I downloaded for free, change the pitch of samples is to reduce or increase the speed (and hence length) of the sample. This is fair enough as it's the most obvious way from a pure sound point of view.

But is there anything I can get that will increase or decrease sample pitch without changing the sample length? I'm thinking, for example, the "intergalactic planetary" thing in the Beastie Boys' Intergalactic, but I'm sure you know what I mean even if you haven't heard the track. I'd really like something to do this, especially if it does it in "real time" on the computer, i.e. I can just flick the slider with the mouse and it changes pitch. I've tried stuff like this using soundforge with some success, but it takes ages of fiddling around to get it right and is obviously not "interactive" or real time.

There must be something out there, as it's obviously been done before, but is it insanely expensive? It sounds like a technically really hard thing to do in real-time (and therefore expensive), but here's hoping!

Thanks, Jim

p.s. if the soundfont system can do something like this, sorry for posting this Q. I haven't spent much time with that thing as fruity loops appeared to do pretty much the same thing itself. If soundfonts can do what I want, could I have some pointers? Thanks a lot?

I believe ACID will allow you to do this . . . as will Sound Forge.
