Is it true you have to realign yer heads and bias calibration levels when you change brands of tape? Also, what brand goes "best" with the TSR-8?

Realign the tapes? No, I don't think so, never heard of it before...

Change the Bias? Yes, different brands of tapes may perform at their peaks with different bias. If you need to change it depends on which tape you are Switching to and from.

It seems the Quantegy 456 tapes are a safe bet for almost any operation...

Erm, thing is, I don't know what brand of tape the machine was calibrated for before I got it. Rats. What are the likely sonic difficiencies you will hear if the bias calib for the tape you're using is inaccurate?? Forgive me for sounding like such a moron!

camus - How did it go? I just picked up a TSR 8 and have the same questions you asked. No idea of what tape was being used. Did you mess with the bias adjustment? What brand did you go with?

I have finished the calibration of my machine, anyway, and it sounds good! It sounded good before too, but at least I'm now sure I have the right levels and stuff!

I did fiddle with the bias, and should probably write dwon my experience, as I did a couple of mistakes. It took two long evenings of calibration, but It wasn't very hard. Hardest was figuring out a good way to measure levels exactly without a good voltmeter or an oscilloscope! :)

Calibrating

I know I already mentioned this a while ago, but it was amazingly helpful to me: I just worked on my TSR-8 by following the recent article in Tape Op <www.tapeop.com>, and it really made a difference in both the fidelity of the recordings and my confidence with the equipment. It was by far the most concise and accurate description of head maintenance I've run across.

Err, apologies for digging up this thread again. I've been using 456 for awhile now and haven't changed the bias. Things sound fine as they are. However, being of the itchy-fingered persuasion, I am going to try changing tape! The TSR-8 manual says that adjusting bias is only necessary if you replace the repro/record head. Is this true??

Hey, Lewis! How bout summarizing some of the tips of that TapeOp issue and posting them here! They would be very much appreciated, thanks!!!
