I just put a 12AT7 tube in place of the 12AX7 tube in the first preamp tube slot of my Hot Rod Deluxe:

fantastic. It raises my clean headroom considerably. I was finding that the amp was breaking up at 3 or so on the volume knob before, but now I can take it all the way to 5 and keep the tone clean. All the grit and dirt is still there, it just has to be louder to get it (or use a pedal).

Just wanted to say, in the event of any other Fender Hot Rod series owners out there, if you have bemoaned that you can't get your cleans at a substantial volume, this is one way to do it, and for under $10.

:D

12dw7

Another great tube is the 12DW7. Its half a 12ax7 and half a 12au7. It can soften your gain up pretty well.....

It works great in my Marshall DSL401. It's a VERY high gain amp. I tried a 12au7 in V1 but it really made my clean channel weak. After looking at the amps schematic I found that in v2 the 12DW7 would put the 12au7 side in the OD circuit and the 12ax7 in the clean circuit. The OD channel is sooo much smoother and I still get beautiful cleans.....

this may be an option for some of you out there..... get the 12DW7 datasheet and check out your amps schematic

What brand was it? I had Sovteks put in my Fender Twin and I prefer the old RCA's.
