whats the ideal order here.
i have vocal mic, to pre amp, to compressor, to fx unit, to recorder.
Is this the best route, or should the compression come right before the recorder(if i am using compression for the take that is)

mic --> preamp --> recorder

the others in between preamp and recorder as needed...

It depends on the material, but it's not very often that you compress AFTER fx..... I'd put compression in before you add any fx...

Speaking of fx, it's also a better idea to add fx later, unless for some reason the fx are married to the sound source or you have limited fx capabilities at mixdown...

thanks blue. now let me ask you this:
i have an akai dps 12. the trim knobs are line hard left, and mic hard right. when im coming out of my pre, should i use both my trim more towards the mic side and the gain/drive on the pre to get the best sound? i seem to be distorting the signal all the time. not peaking, for i can get hte levels perfect, but the signal itself.

I have not used your recording device - but since you are already amping the signal (through a mic pre) your trim should be set to line level. Your faders should be normalized (set to 0db) and then use the mic pre to adjust the level into the recorder.

so does that mean i keep the trim pegged hard left? (the line side)?

I would think yes - if line level is hard left, then set it at hard left.

Naturally, like with any recording signal chain you have to trust your ears.
