Hey guys, I'm using CEP 2.0 (Still kind of groping in the dark with it a bit :o )...

But I was wondering if the built in reverbs were "decent" to start with, or should I look to something else as my main "reverb" such as a rack mount unit or "plug in"? (I have no ideal how plugins work :o )

I'm guessing that you can adjust the parameters of the onboard stuff in CEP, but I've not messed with that yet,.....nor do I know how for sure.

I recorded this little test vocal track with a SP C1 --> DMP-3 ---> Delta 1010 --->CEP 2.0. . I panned them 100% L/R and added some verb and 20ms delay to one side........am I on the right track with this??

Any info or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!! :D

Thanks,
Rick

Your C1 Vocal Test Track sounds really nice. Which verb setting did you use? I want to try this.

I love the CEP's Quickverb. It's not CPU-intensive so you can use it in Multi-track and adjust the settings as the track plays. Somehow, they took that feature away in Adobe Audition 2.0.

-Delay Effects-->Quickverb

This is my "magic" setting for vocals:

Room size: between 50 - 100
Decay: between 3000 - 6000 ms
Smoothness: 0
High Freq. Cutoff: between 15,000 - 20,000
Low Freq. Cutoff: 20
Original (dry): 100%
Reverb (wet): between 10 - 17%

Tell me what you think of it on your vocal.

I tried the WAVE's reverbs, but I don't like them. Well, I just don't have the patience to mess around with all those settings in WAVES to search for a setting with better quality than what I had.

If anyone has a suggestion for any other setting (for any and every vocal style), please contribute.

I'll try that out as soon as I get a chance (Thanks for the reply by the way!! .... I was begining to wonder...)

I don't recal which setting I used, I think it was vocal presence or something like that. I just used the factory preset :o

When it comes to delay's I pretty much know the in's and out's of those settings... being a guitar player and messing with delay pedals and racks for years and years. But when it comes to reverb, I don't even know where to start. I wish there was just this killer reverb, and you could just adjust the effect level or something???

Cool Edit's reverbs are okay if you can't afford something better. They work. But better stuff sounds better. Think about all the stuff that Cool Edit can do for that fairly modest price tag. So although Cool Edit does everything okay (reverb, delay, compression, EQ etc) it does nothing spectacularly (except noise reduction, maybe). It's a really good all-around software. But if you want something that really works well for particular tasks, then you're going to have to pay for something that really works well for that particular task. I really like the Waves reverb. But it's expensive, and it's always bundled with some other stuff which you may or may not want to buy. As for me, I bought a Lexicon unit because I wanted really good sound on verb. I got it, cuz I paid for it. Similarly I wanted better EQ than Cool Edit's, so I bought a plugin. Nothing expensive, but I like the way it works better than Cool Edit's EQ. The lesson? Use Cool Edit, for sure. But if you're unhappy with the sound you get or the way it works, then buy something better.

Does anyone know if the quality and amount of effects improves as you upgrade to AA1.5, and then again if you go up to AA 2.0???

I just upgraded to AA1.5 and haven't had a chance to check everything out yet.

So........if I'm going to have to pay for some good verb, what is one of the better bang for your buck verbs that would be a step up from AA1.5??

Thanks,
Rick

I have AA1.5 too. I've tried AA2.0 and didn't like it. I think the quality of the reverbs are the same, and AA1.5 is very stable and less of a CPU-hog than 2.0. (Although I would love to have input monitoring ability of AA2.0 to be incorporated into 1.5) But input monitoring and other features didn't seem to justify the frustration that I got from it, so I just kept the 1.5.

The hot thing right now is convolution reverb.

Just download SIR (the host of convolution verbs)
and all the IMPULSES (there are many of them) from http://www.noisevault.com

They're free and of good quality. The majority of people who use them would vouch for them. If you're not happy with any of them, then think about paying for different ones.

uh, you just went WAAAAY over my head :o

I did read about SIR earlier today when I was searching for different reverbs, but I don't understand how plugins and this SIR stuff works.......

Anyone care to walk me through this v e r y s l o w l y ??

Thanks,
Rick

PS - I actually downloaded the SIR today.....but that's about all I knew/know how to do.

yeah I use the SIR reverb, i think its awesome. I havent tried it on vocals yet but i use it on drums with the Nice Drum Room impulse from the site. I think it sounds good.

Okay. You unzip the .rar file of the SIR you downloaded. There should be a .TXT file and a .DLL file in there. You copy/extract that .DLL file into your C:\Program Files\Adobe\Audition 1.5\vstplugins folder.

1. Then you open your AA1.5 program.
2. Go into Edit Waveform View (as opposed to Multitrack View).
3. At the top of the screen, choose "EFFECTS" (between VIEW and GENERATE).
4. In the dropdown list, choose ADD/REMOVE VST DIRECTORY
5. Add C:\Program Files\Adobe\Audition 1.5\vstplugins, then click OK (AA will automatically search for any new changes.

Under EFFECTS dropdown list, there should now be a VST--->SIR option.

6. Download just a couple of LEXI IMPULSES (or any) from noisevault.com (make sure you know which folder they are saved into).

7. In AA1.5, have your track ready to have effects applied just like you have done with any other effect. Select VST-->SIR

8. On the right side of the SIR program, click on "Open File" and choose any IMPULSE (.wav) file that you just downloaded. The software will automatically detect other impulses in that same folder and now shows them in a list below the tab "Open file".

9. Choose any file, and apply the effect.

10. Voila! Mess with the parameters to your liking.

11. Download more impulses. (they are like reverb presets).

Ha! You guys ROCK!!!!!!!

Those directions are EXACTLY how to do it with NO chace of messing up :D (Well almost! )

Now that that's done.....:D ...

Who wants to walk me through adding "Plugin's"??? - I would imagine it would be alot of the same, but I'm not sure :o

Thanks again!!!!!!!!!!

Rick

I just noticed something. I tried your way of hard pan left and right; it creates a stereo field of vocal. The vocal sounds really nice in this way by itself, but it doesn't sound right when there is backing music.

My way is for one vocal track right in the center field.

BTW, other plugins can be installed the same. You have to "Refresh Effects List" after installations of those plugins in order for them to show up in the list. If you just set up AA1.5, you may need to ENABLE DX effects first in that dropdown list.

"Who wants to walk me through adding "Plugin's"??? - I would imagine it would be alot of the same, but I'm not sure"

If you've got a plugin, create a Plugins folder on the same drive you've got Audition. Then open Audition, go into Edit View, click Effects>Refresh Effects List. If's there's an angel on your shoulder, Audition will automatically find and install the plugins so that every time you open Audition, they will be available and ready to use.

Hmm....

I downloaded a bunch of impulses last night and put them in a folder under my doc.'s. when I go to SIR under the effects menu in AA, then I click on open folder in SIR, ........well when I open the folder is doesn't show anything in there, but if I check the folder in my documents, it has them in there......did I do something wrong??

Friday night I'm going to be doing some acoustic guitar test track recordings and I should have some time to mess with those settings that you gave me......I'll let you know how they turned out.

I may mess with the plugin thing tonight if I get a chance.

Thanks!!

Rick

Well, first you have to unrar/unzip the file you downloaded. These files in there should be .WAV format.

If you already have those .wav files and they still don't show up, then try putting them into another folder.
