I'm a sorta experienced user of the cool edit enviroment and you could say i'm happy with the results I get from it, but many people have recommended Cubase to me and claim it to be far superior than CEP. I tried the trial version of it and it honestly seemed a little complicated. I was wondering if the learning curve is worth it or should i stick with ol' CEP.

Depends how interested you are in sequencing. If you're only concerned with audio tracks, than it would be a total step backwards to buy Cubase, as you'll lose CEP's fantastic editor and decent effects for Cubase's no editor and okay effects (so I've experienced) That so, Cubase's mixer is much more routeable (how might one spell that:confused: ) so you'd get a few more options if you wanna chain a bunch of effects together.

If you wanna get into midi sequencing, then I think I'd use cubase just for that, and maybe some guide audio tracks. Then I'd bounce down my sequences and open them as .wavs in CEP.

There was a time when I was seriously considering buying Cubase for sequencing and the availible mixing options, but I just couldn't spend the money. I did at one point have a copy on my harddrive (before I truly understood the horrors of piracy, Im forever sorry) so I did actually learn how to use it. But then FL 3.56 came out with the provided groove files, and I got a midi drum pad and I realized I can make decent sequences with what I already had. (Long live FL 4.0 while Im at it :D )

It's not worth the effort or the money, says I.

Good Luck
Chris

hey you can download a trial version and check it out

i havent tried cubase. but cool edit rocks

They are 2 different kinds of programs. If your going to compare cep to something, it should be soundforge. Those

How many tracks does Soundforge have?

Ok. Nevermind. I was high when I wrote that. I think I got confused.:)

Sequencer to go with CEP?

Chris, I've just discovered the simplicity and beauty of CEP. The few times I've messed around with other all-in-one apps I've nearly ripped my hair out. I've clicked on every little cryptic icon in Logic and I couldn't get it to do squat, and I'm a person who has really used Photoshop, Flash, etc so I'm not a total newbie when it comes to figuring out fairly complex apps. So my problem is I need a MIDI sequencer. Are you able to sync Fruity Loops with CEP or can someone else suggest a good stand alone sequencer. I'm totally through with trying to find a good all-in-one. I'm convinced it's in my interest to find the simple apps that do what they do really well and match them up.

I do all my arranging in FruityLoops- I'll create all my synth tracks or electro drums or whatever samples I need, and then I'll export them in a .wav file and then just open them in CEP. If I need a guide track (scratch vocal, rhythm guitar, drummix) you can now load one up in FL Studio (Fruityloops 4.0) Which is cool. You can also use this feature (and FL's .wav editor) to add subtle VST effects to your tracks and then open them back up in CEP. I know you can use a VST-wrapper, but not all my freeware VST effects will work with a wrapper.

I don't know about syncing. I think maybe Dobro had tried this, but Im not gonna waste the CPU power on having both apps running at once. If you need record outboard synths/samplers with cpu midi files, either use FL's little audio recording, or open up the MIDI file with CEP, and have it play back in sync.

I know it seems a bit cumbersome, but its actually really really easy, and its never interrupted my creative flow.

Good Luck
Chris

Yeah, what chris said about Fruity Loops and Cool Edit.

There's this though - the two programs don't run simultaneously on my machine - or at least, I can't play a file in Cool while the same file's open in Fruity. So it means closing one app down (or closing the session/file) while you're using the other one. It's a bit cumbersome.

But despite some recurrent irritations, I find both Cool and Fruity really engaging, really USEFUL programs.

Also, there are the message boards for each program. Both very active and useful, although the Cool Edit board is more useful, more patient and more polite. A lot of the people on the Fruity board are assholes.

:D Just Kidding

Dobro- I'm interested in your opinion of the CEP forum at Syntrillium. It seems to me that all discussions focus on solving problems, and the only ideas anyone ever offers is tech support.

Well, I guess that's mostly what we do in the forum on this BBS, but I feel its much more engaging. Like I can just sit down, and read posts, and its somewhat fun and relaxing. At Syntrillium, it's only helping people figure out junk they could have read in the manual (or the help file)

Cheers
Chris

Also, with FL 4 you can now open FL as a DX plugin. I haven't tried this yet in CEP but it looks promising.

FL 4.0 allows you to use FruityLoops as a Direct-X instrument, the equivalent of a VST 2 instrument. Cool Edit only allows for use of direct-x audio plugins.A Direct-X instrument is for an app like Sonar (or FL studio were it a different instrument) that only uses dx plugins. Opening up FruityLoops in CEP (if it were possible....which its not)would only lead to two audio apps open, alot of cpu power being wasted, and one too many headaches.

Chris, both the Fruity board and the Cool Edit board are useful, but I prefer the Cool Edit board for different reasons. The first is because I get answers there more often and more easily - that board has a lot of radio guys who know Cool Edit better than anybody on the planet because they use it every day. I also like it because Syntrillium come in from time to time with some really useful information. Finally, there's a minimum of attitude there - by contrast important people on the Fruity board seem irritated, impatient and often rude by comparison. They've recently tried to rehabililtate that, which is a measure of how serious they are, I think.

Of all of them, I prefer this board though. :)

For some reason I feel the CEP-CUBASE question was lost somewhere along.

I would say CEP. I'm sure Cubase cost's more, the wave editing can't be as good as CEP's, and Cubase requires that little key
do-dad...

My vote goes for CEP.

hmmmm i think cool edit is better because its easier to use.

when i started using it i didnt know a thing about recording so i just started pressing buttons lol

lets say its "didactic"
