Hey y'all,

This is my wife's Celtic acoustic band doing a traditional song called "MacPherson's Rant." I was wondering what everybody thinks of this mix. Any tips or opinions are greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Sounds pretty damn good to me. I like the balance and mix for the most part.

I would probably raise the fiddle and the harmonies just a touch in the verses but that's nitpicking. Personal taste.

Great song and performances. I really enjoyed it. :thumbs up:

I like pretty all of this, but have two worries:

1 At the start, and in the middle where there is just vocal and guitar, there is reverb on vocal but not (or not as much) on guitar, so there is a disconnect on their spatial relationship.

2 I really struggle with the sound of the fiddles. There is a notable lack of detail, as if the tops have been rolled right off, and they have no sense of space. They are just kind of left and right. Maybe they need extra reverb to give them some air.

I don't hear fiddles. I hear a fiddle and a flute. But yeah, the fiddle sounds like it's had some top rolled off.

I guess that's what I mean by 'lack of detail'. My listening wasn't able to distinguish easily (at least at first listen. I haven't been back to it yet) between flute-ishness and fiddle-ishness.

Nice performances, there's a lot competing for the mid frequencies when everything is going at the same time. The mix doesn't have a big spectrum of frequency, but I'm not sure it could with this instrumentation. (or the way you captured this instrumentation) You could make some small low-mid cuts, maybe more panning, its a little crowded, but this is very nit-picky stuff, overall it sounds quite good. Nice Job.

My only comment is the harmonies could be brought up a but more to almost equal the lead vocal. Really good tune.

Thanks much for the feedback y'all --- all good stuff. I agree that the guitar is too dry, and the fiddle was definitely too dull. We'll have another go at it.

Thanks! :)

I've had a big fat listen to this track now, and I'm really enjoying it.

I like the quality of voices and their mixing. I like the sound of the guitar, djembe.

I think the levels are fine. I'm hearing a rich dynamic mix which is a pleasure to listen to.

I hear now that there is flute and fiddle, but I still mourn the lack of detail and crispness in their sound. For example, I would love to hear a bit of breath with the flute, and a bit of bow scrape with the fiddle.

On my system, I'm getting a bit of boominess in the bottom end. When I load it into Reaper, load up an EQ and pull a bit of 66 out, it sharpens it up it up nicely

Bingo. They're there, but they don't have a lot of presence or character. Depends how they were recorded, though.

The acoustic guitar sounds really nice. Vocal is really nice too. Heck everything sounds good. Like the harmonies.

About the only thing I can think of that I might suggest to improve the mix is to tweak the bass tone. It sounds just a bit sterile. I'd like a little more warmth in its tone.

Other than that, I thought this was great.
