I've been doing some research into CD players as I'm poking around for "another" one.

Read some copy that stated this particular CD player would play a CD not yet finalized?

I'm just wondering how it would sound not finalized and what's the point?

Thanks and Happy St. Patrick's Day

Hey Hornet,

From what I understand and from my own experience, the sonic data is unchanged. It remains the same whether the CD is finalized or not. All finalizing does is closes and formats the data so that it can be read on many different CD players/readers.

Also, if the CD is not finalized, you can still write to it.

This has been my experience.

A non-finalized disc does not have a closed TOC (Table of Contents) written to it. Most disc players look at the head and tail of the TOC before it knows where to go to begin playback.

The disc can still be written to, but many CD players will still not play it as it was not written in DAO (Disc At Once) mode.

As a sidenote, even if it plays on several systems, NEVER send a disc such as this out for replication - It is NOT RedBook compatible. Even when written in DAO mode, it may STILL not be RedBook compatible.

Rule of thumb: If you don't have a frame-accurate PQ log, and know 100% that your disc IS written to RedBook standards, assume that your disc is NOT RedBook compatible and DO NOT send it out for replication or duplication.

You'll thank me later.

YO Pier:

Thanks a bunch. I kind of guessed that the burned data could be read but not by the regular CD players out and about.

I'm looking at a Sony CDP-D12. It has XLR outs which would make it very groovy to transfer CD backing music right into my recorder.

Thanks for the info and have a nice St. Patrick's Day.

As well, Thanks MM.

Yo MMaster:

Been cogitating over your words about Red Book, etc. I've read the story on Orange book and Red book, etc.

I'm assuming that my Yamaha 2816 burns to Red Book Standards; however, Blue Bear told me his studio CD player could not read a disc I sent him.

I can play the discs on my player , including the car; folks that I give discs to can play them at home.

What am I missing? Or, is the Yam 2816 not capable of burning Red Book CDs?

I usually create a list when I'm burning and let the SIAB do the entire list.

Enlighten me.

Thanks

I have the "disc at once" mode but always use the other choice.

Any disc not written in DAO mode will read as a ("R-32?" Can't remember right now...) fatal error to decks that are looking for RedBook discs.

Same with the replicator.

For audio, you're almost always better with DAO. Actually, I can't even think of one exception. Data is another story...

Yo Massive One of recording ratiocination:}

[Don't you hate retired English teachers?}

Am expecting my new Sony CD D12 player to arrive any day; I do believe this player will play non-finalized discs.

I guess it's some type of advantage but since I don't do CDRW discs, it doesn't matter if I hear it before finalizing; except, one thing, I'll be able to do two or three tracks and listen to them and still be able to add on more.

"DAO" Enlighten my ken. What does the acronym stand for?

Thanks,

Green Hornet:p :D :D :p :cool:

MM:

Excuse my redundancy. I know what DAO means. My mind just slipped out sideways.

Thanks,
