Hello All. I'll try to be brief and concise. While attempting to playback a homemade CDR in my vintage Sony Walkman, I experienced 2 mins. of music followed by skips, burps, and farts up to which time I pulled the offending sound disk from the unit only to discover (much to my horror) the CDR was used as a buffet table. After cleaning the Sony several times with a Scotch Laser Lens Cleaner, my unit now decides it will only play (flawlessly) my own homemade CDR burned on a Roland CD-R2. Nothing else despite more cleaning attempts. No Chick Corea, No Pat Methany, No Genesis, NOTHING. (Case#2) Another filth monger, inserted his homemade CDR into my friends Ford Explorer CD player. Now his Ford CD player experiences the same "Read Conflicts" that my Walkman posesses. Although Filth monger #2 can play this musical serving tray in his own auto CD player without incident.
My Question: Would a CD player incur any damage (fixable or not) while attempting to playback a homemade CDR where obvious read errors had occured. I do realize the implications of playing back DIRTY CD's. But I'm very curious as to what problems on a long term basis can occur for a unit that would not play correctly or at all where a read error was present. I realize I've just stated a two fold problem so any advice from either camp would be well received. I really want to learn what's up especially with the Sony Walkman. Feel free to include comedic responses. This strange occurrence just screams to be poked fun at. You can also e-mail if you desire. aol.com Thanks for all the usefull info through the year.

If it's just a scratch or a mis-burn (read: coaster) putting it into a CD player will cause no harm. A contaminated disc will definitely put a reader at risk. I always try to give both sides of a disc a quick look-see in good light before inserting them into my equipment. I realize my attempts to filter out the cat hair and PBJ
are about as effective as airport security but I still try.

Thanks for the info drstawl concerning scratched or misburned CDR's. All appears well again with cd players. As for any further intrusions, I promise that no more sneaker lighting passengers will be admitted. Thanks again for your reply.
