I found this cool tool for finding out info about CDR's called CDR Identifier.

CDR Identifier : This tool was developed to read the ATIP from CDR media using a CD Burner. The ATIP tells who has manufactured the disc and what dye typethey used.
To use the program under Win95/98 there should be an ASPI manager installed on the system. See the next file from Adaptec.

The program I use to burn data discs will identify the CD-R maker, but not the dye type.
