CdR faults

When I burn a audio CD, which has little 'plops' and mistakes in it, is this the fault of the original CD, the CD-r, The writer, the software, of a combination?

I'd blame your girlfriend for not letting you buy more expensive equipment.
 
If you don't have a girlfriend I'd say it is a combination of computer and software. I had the same problem, and after a year I trew the whole system out of the window and bought a real computer (Mac G4)
